My World Info

It's the day before Xmas break

You know what that means?  Unmotivated.

So this morning on the Metro the light went out.  I have to go a mere 3 stops from my home to my desintation, and they went out at stop 2.  Whatever.  Annoying since I couldn't read the newspaper, but not that life-threatening.  Stop 2 is also the Arlington Cemetery, which isn't even open at 7am when I ride the train.  Never once have I seen someone get on or off there at this hour of the morning, yet every day it stops.  Including today.  Fine, whatever.  What is curious, though, is that the train decides not to stop at the next stop - my stop - and instead just sails right through.  Still no lights.  Cruise through the next stop.  Now people are getting mad, since about 90% of the train was getting off at these 2 stops.  Instead, we get no explanation and complete darkness.  When the train finally stops at the next stop - Farragut West - people are irate and storm off en masse.  We all now have to board the trains going the opposite direction to get back to our desinations.  Wonderful.  Seriously, would it have hurt anyone to give a 5 second explanation, rather than leave everyone in mystery?  Love to see them pull some stunt like this when preparing for the inauguration.

Making my grocery list is right up there iwht my favorite things in the world.  Not entirely sure why, but I love it.  I am also obsessive about not going shopping until I literally have nothing left.  NOTHING.  I like it that way.  Keeps me on track.  I think part of it is a backlash to my mother, who, when growing up, would refuse to inventory and we would end up with 9 bottles of ketchup and go months without BBQ sauce.  Who knows.

Not a good game, but a funny concept.

And since it;s the last day I will be positng before Christmas, Merry Christmas to everyone.  If you celebrate Channukah, Merry Christmas anyway.  Christmas is a national holiday.  If you want to complain about Christmas, I expect you to voluntarily not take that day off and instead go into work.

Also - I probably will not be blogging for a few weeks after this.  Going to be home, semi-working and then off to a wedding.  Be back in the saddle hopefully on the 5th of January.

Thank you to all my readers, everyone who has spent time on this blog, commented, contributed an idea, and generally, anyone who would take time out of their day to listen to me babble.  Thank you.

Baby It's Cold Outside

But seriously, I am going to freeeze out there.  Not even joking.  When i was walking to the Metro this morning I thought to myself, wow, it is extremely cold out.  Upon some investigation when arriving at work, it was 15 degrees, feelsl ike 1.  Wonderful.

Did a bunch of Christmasy things on Friday, as intended.  Went to Georgetown Cupcake first.  The cupcakes were excellent - will give them a lot of credit.  There were no lines as I was told there would be and the place was strangely tiny for something with so much hype.  Regardless, they were a bit expensive ($3) but delicious - thumbs up.  I had a Red Velvet upon recommendation of the girl working there.  It was really quite good, the cake was light and fluffy and the frosting was magnificent - ridiculously rich yet still light and creamy.  Like, the texture was weird - it was that of cool whip or something comparable but the flavor was like eating a really heavy, thick cream-cheese frosting.  Thumbs up.  Expensive and out of the way, but worth going once or twice for the uniqueness.

Next stop was Baked and Wired, anothier cupcake place.  Me and them are on bad terms now - "closing at 7" actually meant "We lock the doors at 6:10".  Retards.  Next was the holiday performance at the Milleennium stage at the Kennedy center.  This was the first time I had been to the Kennedy center and it was awesome.  Very very cool place.   Just off the top of my head, judging from the architecture, I dated the building at 1971.  BAM.  Dead on.  I am so good.  Regardless, the "holiday" performance was actually a Jewish folk group doing all kiinds of songs including the song the band plays in Star Wars when they walk into the shady bar place and some eastern european samba.  Acceptable, and very well attended.  Did what I needed it to do, especially since it was free.

Next was off to the White House for the National Tree.  Solid, as usual.  The performance was an elemntary school choir that was pretty lousy, but considering how cold it was, I don't hold it against them.  Spent a lot of time hanging around the burning yule log for heat.

Skipped out on Zoo Lights because it cost $12.  Instead went for some drinks at Capital City Brewery where... along with the theme of disappointment for the evening ... didn't have 2 of the 3 featured beers I went to try.  Oh well, the Inaugurale was pretty good.  overlal though, good fun Friday.  And cheap.

Yesterday's NFL games were serious crap - Saturdays college hoops games were awesome.  Syracuse beat Memphis and that's what matters.

Can we finally accept that Brnadon Jacobs, and not Plaxico, is the key to Giants success?  Burress out, team is 3-2.  Jacobs out, team is 1-2.  Burress was out last night but Jacobs is back, Giants win.

I lost in my fantasy football final yesterday to Frank, and I am not too thrilled.  I posted a 147 in a PPR league... which is awesome ... but Frank put up an absurd 173.  33 points from Drew Brees, 22 from Vincent Jackson, 27 from Hines Ward, 26 from Mark Clayton, 19 from Tony Gonzalez, 20 from the dam n Seahawks Defense.  Ugh.

What day is it? oh, right.

Friday before Christmas is that much tougher.  Thankfully all my shopping is done, i have whiped my hands clean and am not stress-free until the 4th.  Oh wait, except for cleaning my entire apartment among about 1000 other things, 2 days of work, getting to the airport, christmas festivities, my tentative work schedule the next week, finding something to do ovfer new years then going to the wedding.  vacation?  not so much.

RIP Mark Felt aka Deep Throat.  he was responsible for all things watergate and exposed Nixon.  Nixon, by the way, criminally underrted.  Outside of being a complete nutcase, he was a very good politician.  He brought us out of Vietnam, opened relations with China dna Russia and brought about SALT I, among other things.

On that note, I realize that I read a lot.  My standard week goes as such - M-Thurs read whatever book I am working on.  Fri-Sun read the Onion and Sports Illustrated, both cover-to-cover.  I am militant about my schedule, yes, but it is also a working formula.  Right now I am working on Malcolm Gladwell's the Outliers.  It's ok  -he jumps to too many unnecessary conclusions.  What's next on tap?  bret hart's biography and i am PSYCHED.

For those readers who are not plugged into DC life, it is becoming a big thing for people to be renting out their houses/apartments for the inauguration, since people are paying INSANE amoutns of money for them.  Well, this is the best ad I have seen yet.

Here;s a solid guide to cheap bubbly for the holidays.  Being a big fan of champagne, I might actually look into some of these.

Oh, and this.  The Bacon cheese roll-up.

And no joke, I am going to turn into a blubbering idiot when I see the Wrestler.  Watch the trailer and tell me you aren't inspired.  Or depressed.  But mostly depressed.

And now, Xmas to lift our spirits.

I hav eto plan my Friday.  I think I am going to go to hte Lights in the Zoo, Georgetown Cupcake, the concerts at the Ellipse, the free concert at the Millennium Stage, the cafe in Adams Morgan with supposedly killer churros, maybe capital city brewery for some wintry brews... and finding a way to travel between all of them.  Will be fun I hope.

Since I talked it up, here is a snapshot from this weekend's Ugly Christmas Sweater Party.  Notice Andy's mother and grandmother even got in on the ugly-xmas-sweater action.  And if you look closely, you will notice that my head is less than half the size of Brendan's giant dome (back row, about a third of the way over from the left).  Also a big fan of Jaime, Jake, Johnson all wearing women's sweaters 93 guys in a row in front of Santa)

This one from FOP (friend of the podcast) KG - 40 inspirational speeches in 2 minutes.  And worst of all?  I can name allllmost all of them.

Oh, what a feeling -

we're dancing on the cieling!  Lionel is the best, man.  GO youtube that song.  So good.

Anyways, we covered a lot of stuff today which manes not a lot of stuff tdaoy.  Oh well.  And not a lot of spell check.  Sorry.

I woke up this morning at 6:46.  I had to be out of my apartment by 7:04.  I somehow, some way made it.  And I am notoriously slow.

Brought to my attention by friend of the blog M*A, here's a preview of tomorrow's muppet special:

Stupid Syracuse lost last night on this stupid shot

I am going to my third fantasy final in 3 seasons.  I've played in 4 football and 1 baseball so far - 1 championship, 2 other finals (one pending).  I think its time that I crown myself the greatest fantasy player of all time.  The SABR league will be the deciding factor next year.

Had an egg nog latte from starbucks yesterday.  Gotta have it, no matter how un-manly it is.  It was pretty tasty - not enough nog though.  The only thing is that I don't drink a lot of caffeine, so a cup of coffee, especially starbucks jet fuel, especially on an empty stomach - i was literally sitting at my desk shaking.  not so cool.

SI has a gallery up for the biggest/best moments of 2008 that was pretty entertaining - i had actually forgotten about some of them - ie the Nadal/Federer Wimbledon Final and the Mediate/Tiger US Open final.  Both were AWESOME.

Sen. Tom Coburn has up a funny read about the worst examples of wasteful government pork in 2008.  it's long but fairly entertaining to skim through.

Although it was requested, I will not be posting any of the party highlights/lowlights on this blog due to the obscene and generally taerrible nature of many of them, ranging from random naked guy in a dark bathroom to sleeping in a pile of glass to being beer pong partners with someones father.  Just saying, they are proibably better left un-relayed.  If there aresome pictures that are good, though, I will post them.

And finally...

Substance? On This blog?

Yes, you are reading that correctly.  Insane, I know.  I actually have a decent amount of stuff to talk about, even if some of them are quick-hitters.

There is a huge next-weekend of college basketball and I am very excited.

The Giants are terrible and the loss of Jacobs makes me mad.  Screw Plaxico - the loss of Jacobs is what really hurts.

My thoughts onthe Office from last week?  It was good not great.  This was clearly a "plot" episode that wasn't particularly funny.  There was a funny scene or two, but nothing ground-breaking.  The other thing, as has always been my complaint - they pull the trigger way too quickly on certain things.  They could have had boiling tension between Phyllis and Angela for so much more than one episode and had it explode into the affair confession.  Also - wht was with Andy?  Did he not hear them over his sitar playing?  Or was he just ignoring it?  Not well explained.  They could have also done something more with Meredith's drinking - again, why pull the trigger on this situaion in one episode?  You know this is going to be forgotten in the next episode.  Very short-sighted decisions.  LOVED the scene with the black doll though.  Hilarious.

the Mets finally traded schoenweiss.  This on the heels of trading heilman.  In 2007, the problem was the bullpen - what did Omar do?  Nothing.  In 08, the problem is the bullpen - at least now he gets it.  Joe Smith, Schoenweiss, Heilman, Matt Wise, Wagner - all gone.  Fine by me.  I don't even cre who they bring in to fill the roles - just blow things up.  There's no way anyone can be as bad as Schoenweiss/Heilman.

On Thursday of last week I went to Good Stuff Eatery - the place opwned by Spike from TOp Chef.  It's just a burger chain, an idea I kind of like.  Spike, knowing that his celebrity is not foever, is cashing in.  Opening a high-end place is good, yes, but not accessible to fans of the show.  Open a place that makes good, accessible food - burgers, fries, shakes - and make them good.  It was like Five Guys.  The patties were tasty and larger than Five Guys and the burger I got was very tasty.  It had a big patty, lots of cheese, onion rings and chipotle BBQ sauce.  I give it a good thumbs up.  The fries were excellent, although the portion was enormous.  I got the Village Fries, which had thyme and rosemary and sea salt.  They were very good.  I passed on the shake because it was too pricey.  And herein lies the problem - a burger, fries and a soda at Five Guys will run you around $9.  Here, it was $13.  And if I got a shake?  That would've been in the $16-18 range.  That is just too much for takeout burgers.  It was very good once, but it has diminishing returns.  One thing that I did like, thogh, was that they had a huge variety of gourmet burgers - everything from onion rings and BBQ sauce to a fried egg and pepperjack.  I couild go back and not be forced to get the same thing.

Another quick thing - I know there are some complaints about why I post long things one day then nothing for several more days.  Why not just stretch out the topics over multiple days rather than all in one day?  This is what the masses want to know.  Why do I do it this way?  Because I write off the top of my head, often forget what I intend to write about, and need to get thoughts out when I have time/enegy and it is fresh in my brain.  So there.

There is a new Muppets Christmas Speicla on Wednesday and I am excited.

This was all I could think of when I heard about the guy throwing his shoes at bush -

Santa never scared me.  Then again, I never saw an ethnic Santa in my youth.  Just kidding.  But seriously - this gallery is worth a chuckle.

Watched an excellent special on the Shroud of Turin yesterday on Discovery.  I have to admit, I had only ever heard of this before watching the show last night.  Do some reading if you have time - it is fascinating.  Also, thoughts?  I don't think it's legit in the sense that it was Jesus' burial garments, but I thnk there is a very strong possibility that it is the last leader of the Knights Templar.  Also, thought on the supposed Jesus image in the shroud - Jesus was born of Jewish/Israeli parents in Jerusalem around 4 BC.  Why would he look like a Middle-Ages-Era European?  Just saying...

I played quite a bit of Rock Band on Friday.  I am not nearly as good as I thought I was.  Throwing in the bass pedal made my life difficult.

The inauguration is going to be MADNESS.  Here are some highlights from the article -
- "Even if only half of the projected 2 million to 4 million people show up for next month's inauguration, the Washington region's roadways and transit systems will be too pressed to handle the crush."
-"And anyone planning to drive in from Virginia might consider a boat - the Roosevelt, Mmeorial and inbound 14th st bridges will be restricetd to buses and authorized vehicles.  Maryland and DC officials are considering bus-only corridors."
-"If 1 million people try to board the subway at the same time after the main festivities end, it could take more than 8 hours to move everyone."
-"The most the subway system can carry is about 120,000 people per hour.  And that doesnt factor in the inevitable delays caued by out of towners confused about how to use the system.  That number also assumes nobody gets sick, no one jams the door and all people cooperate.  What do you think the odds are for that to happen if we get 4 million people?"

Annnnd finally - a little Xmas action:

Hate comcast.  Back at war with them.

Let's See Here...

Just got back fromlunch and I am full.  Very full.

This was an email I just received from a friend (names removed).  This guy is a genius, right?

"does anyone know where i can get a rufie from?  i'd like to rufie myself just to see what it's like.  i feel like it could be a fun experience.  i mean when they portray it on tv alot of times its funny, like in Family Matters when urkel got rufied he was hilarious so if anyone comes across one let me know thanks. "

Yea.  Let's jut leave it at that.

The Auto Bailout passed and WAMK has some funny commentary regarding it

Supposedly my Christmas Countdown has been subpar, according to TH's favorite villain, the Loughney's Monsters.  I disagree, what are your thoughts?  So she can't complain anymore, I will throw in one of her requests -

To answer one of the questions from yesterday's comments (since I am a man of the people) - do I play an instrument?  Not necessarily.  I used to play one in my youth, also bought a guitar in college but never could be considered actually playing it.  I can play the drums (to a somewhat almost-passable level) but never really learned how to really play.

I also want to send a shout-out to one of my favorite TH bloggs, Shining City at Miss Scarlet's Vittles.  She is calling a quits to blogging, and I want to thank her for keeping me entertained.  Good luck in the future!

And now it's baseball hot stove coverage vs. blogging.  I'll take the hot stove.  Until tomorrow, peace suckas!

this is from one of my absolute favorite movies ever - and is in fact my favorite christmas movie ever.  so hopefully it gets up to Ms. Lo-knees standards.

Today is Tuesday

And since we had some material to discuss yedsterday, it is only iftting that there is nothing today.

3 Things - thoughts on egg nog?  I love it but some refuse to even look at it.  Granted, I drink commercialized egg nog without the raw eggs (not sure what they put in, but there is no way there are actually raw eggs in this stuf i nthe grocery store) and love it.  You can drink it one month a year - you better enjoy it to the fullest.  Thoughts from my readers?  Just curious - in favor or opposed.

This storyt about the governor of illinois is hilarious - like, laugh out loud funny.

Aaron Heilman supposedly is really cheap and loves Wrangler jeans.  Who knew?

Ok 4 things counting this one - I love the Hot Stove for baseball.  And now the Mets are signing K-Rod - 3 years $37 m.  Not that upset about that, to be honest.  I don't love K-rod bu they certainly are not overpaying him.  When he came out looking for 6 years $90M, we had a problem.  3 years and less than half of that?  Fine with me, I guess.  He should hold over the bullpen for a few years until our kids (Eddie Kunz, Bobby parnell) are ready.

Ok Ok - now the Xmas countdown.

Monday Morning

Actually, for a surprise, i have a fair amount to discuss becuase I had a super-energized weekend to deal with.

But first, by request: Band Aid.

Seirously, what was wrong with people in the 80s?

How awesome does this sound?  This is totally on tap for next weekend.  Maybe I will make them with latkes for Hannukah (I know, we're a few weeks away, but I love them).

Quick note on the BCS - Oklahoma-Florida is the game that it should be for the national title.  Too bad none of the other games mean anything at all - they're all going to be blowouts save the Virginia Tech/Cinci game, and that's only becuase they are both average teams at best.  Why isn't Texas playing Alabama instead of Alabama drawing Utah and Ohio State getting thrown to an angry, vengeful and talented Texas team?  My money is on Texas by 40+.  Oklahoma got in ther title game by blowing people out - this will be a blowout of epic proportions.  As for the title game?  I think FL's defense is just a bit better than OK's - so I like Florida and another title for Urban Meyer.

Giants lost this weekend.   Pathetic.  Stupid plaxico.

It was really cold in the office this morning.  I'm sure you care.

Greg Maddux, probably the best pitcher of the modern era, retired today.  Sad day.  As I am sure you may have noticed, I am a Mets fan.  At Maddux's peak, he was  Brave.  But he was unstoppable.  He picked apart offenses like nobody Ihave ever seen and may never see again.  His number in the 93-96 era were utterly insane - since when have we seen guys post consecutive sub-2.00 ERAs?  The dude was insane.  He made a living without big strikeout numbers and without throwing all that hard - he just won.  That inside-out fastball to lefties?  The one that looks inside then creeps back out over the inside half of the plate?  That pitch was disgusting and is still getting gjuys out, even at 85 mph when there has been a scouting report on it for 20 years.  Hats off to Greg Maddux, an ultimate class act on top of a great pitcher.

How about a quick run-down on the weekend?

Friday I left right after work to go up to Baltimore to visit an old friend and go to the Aquarium, which I hadn't been to since I was 4.  I was in a pretty good mood - I like going on special trips liek this - so I got to the train station around 4 for a 4:24 train.  About 4:19 or so I go out to the platform (preface this that I HATE sitting on trains, planes, etc when they are not moving - it is cramped enough).  And instead of getting on the train, it mysteriously closes its doors and leaves, with the Amtrak guy claiming that it was "full" despite the fact that we could see empty seats.  And by "we" I mean the 25 or so people who were left standing on the platform.  Strange, eh?  So I wait for the next train - 4:49.  And so did about 10,000 other people.  So this train is PACKED when it finally shows up.  Instead of arriving in Baltimore at 5:15 as originally planned, or 5:40 like the train was supposed to get in, I finally arrive at 6:40.  The reason I was goingto Baltimore was to go to the Aquarium, where they have $8 after-5pm admission.  It's open until 8.  5-8 for $8?  Not bad (when it normally costs $24).  6:45-8?  Not bad.  Still a good deal, and it was crowded with young tourists so any more time may have made me pull my hair out.  But it was good - I recommend it. I remmeber it being different from my youth, but at age 4, I doubtr the details were really as remmebered.

So anyways, Fri was good.  Thumbs up.  Sat I went out to the American history Museum in mid-afternoon.  Was a bit disappointed by 2 things - 1.) it was FREEZING cold 2.) they didn't change any exhibits.  It was closed for 2 years and they literally tore apart the interior... but kept the exhibits all the same?  I mean the material is excellent, but I have already done it.  Thumbs... in the middle.

Sat night went out with some guys to celebrate one of them's newfound employment.  Hit the bars.  Awesome time.  AWESOME time.  Thumbs way up.

Sunday my obsession with productivity took over and I did some Christmasty things even though it was about 10 degrees.  It was cold.  Really cold.  Wne tot georgetown CHristmas festival that literally had nothing there becuase it was so cold.  Got a photo with Santa (it might be posted later - we'll see).  Went to the Georgetown Harbor Christmas tree... which was underwhelming.  walked to the kennedy center to see the millennium stage which has performances 364 days a year.  Guess which day they don't have them?  Packed up and walked some more to the White House, saw a middle school choir with a girl who couldn't play the piano and the National Tree.  It was satisfying.  Oh and somewhere along the line stopped by Starbucks to have their holiday drinks - I have to say, the Peppermint Mocha Twist was awesome - tasted like mint chocolate chip hot chocolate.  Then home.  Outside of the disappointments and cold?  Thumbs up.  Can't give anything other than a thumbs up to xmas activity.

COUNTDOWN - (first, natalie cole is my wife.  second, why aare there chinese subtitles?)
