Friday!

Ok I have to apologize, just not that much to talk about today, again.  This one has a little bit a political/current events stance, but nothin too deep, don't worry.  Enjoy your Friday!

Woke up to a great song.  I will post it at the bottom.

I watched I Now Pronounce You Chuck and Larry last night.  Not bad, not amazing.  Some funny parts, and it falls into that I will watch it if it's on TV ones, just like Big Daddy or Mr. Deeds.

8pm tonight on E is a special about the top 15 political sex scandals.  awesome.  and well-timed.

Sarah Palin was named McCain's VP pick.  I dont want to get too political, but I love this pick.  She is young and good-looking and smart and will steal the thunder from the Obama machine.  As one reader, BrianR points out, though, this could create a hilarious beauty-and-the-beast contrast between her and McCain, making them a giant caricature.  Overall though?  I give it 2 thumbs up.

Michael Jackson is 50.  Not so cool.  What is cool?  The fact tht this guy really put out about 50 awesome songs when he was at his peak.  It's cool, go back and listen to Beat It or Thriller and tell me they're not awesome.  I dare you.

As is the case with a lot of these huge foods, I am not sure if it looks heavenly or vomit-inducing.  I am going to go with the former on this one...

...and the latter with this nastiness.

A video of the song I woke up to, then the conclusion of the 100 foods to eat before you die...

Ridiculously Tired

Got in at 1:00am last night from the Journey concert, and I am normally asleep by 10:45.  Ugh.  5 hours of sleep, you don't do me no good.

West Wing writer - Aaron Sorkin - is making a movie about Facebook.  Genius.

The English Breakfast is going to kill you all.  And look at that mess - are you surprised?  And in case you're curious, that would be mushrooms, tomatos, sausage, canadian bacon, potatos, eggs, baked beans and toast.  And yes, they eat this almost every day.

I have one more thing to throw in after the Journey Review, but it's long, so bear with me for a minute.

Ok so everyone who reads this knows I was super excited for the Journey concert last night.  The show was at the Nissan Pavilion, out in middle-of-nowhere, VA.  It was about an hour or so west of DC, and we were leaving after work at 5.  Hmmm.  Anyways, the ride wasn't too bad, and we got to Manassas around 6:20 or so.  We opted for some FivE Guys for dinner, and a good decision it was.  Drove about a mile before coming to a dead stop that held us up for about 30 minutes waiting to get into the parking lot.  Terrible system.  Althoughj, i do have to admit that there were some brains behind the operation of having the parking cost built into the cost of the ticket.  Anyways, the parking was jus a giant field in te middle of nowhere, and there were a billion cars everywhere.  Whatever.  We realize that Cheap Trick is already playing before we even get out of the car - whatever.  Between the toss-up of cheap trick or five guys, five guys won.  We got to see the last 4 songs of Cheap Trick - 3 of which were songs I knew (and I only know about 5 Cheap Trick songs).  We caught The Flame, Surrender, (some unknown one) and Dream Police.  All were good, and these guys looked old though.  The singer's voice really has taken a beating over the years and it kind of showed, but they put on an admirable performance, so no real complaints.

Next up was Heart, who started around 8:15 and played until about 9.  They went through al the big jams - Crazy on You, Magic Man, Alone, Barracuda.  And to be honest, they sounded awesome.  I think women's voices hold up better than men's, so even at 60 or so the singer was really belting like she was 20.  They were really very good, although I was a little disappointed to see that Nancy Wilson, the guitarist babe, is actually just a rhythm guitar player and not the lead.  She did, however, rip out an acoustic solo/intro to Crazy on You that was very, very solid.  One quick pet peev: opening bands should not have encores.  They did one, which was fine, but I don't think an encore should be demanded ebfore the headliner comes out.  Overall, they were really very very good.  Strongly recommended.

Journey came on at 9:30 sharp and opened with... a new song?  Seriously?  Not a good way to start the set.  After that, they jumped into some classics - Only the Young, Faithfully, Open Arms, Lights, Separate Ways.  Somewhere in the middle of the set they played 2 new songs.  I hate it when bands play new material - listen, nobody is there to see the new stuff.  Stick to the classics.  I know you have a new cd coming out, but more people will be excited about it if they love your live show than by assaulting the audience with songs they do not have a particular interest in hearing.  Anyways, the songs that the did play were awesome.  Speaking of which, we got a few more new songs threown in there too.  In total, they played for an hour and a half, including 6 new songs.  An hour and a half of music - roughly 18 songs -and a third of that is new?  This coming from a band who peaked in 1983?  Speaking of which, the new singer was downright awkward.  Close your eyes, and he was Steve Perry - but eyes open and he was an awkward younger Filipino guy trying to do the Carlton dance.  It was pretty obvious that the guy had little stage presence, and really didn't have the best idea of what he was doing out there.  Regardless, his voice was very very good and he really could belt it out with the best of them.  They closed with Don't Stop Believing, jumped right into oneof my favorite songs, Be Good To YOurself... then left the stage for the night.  Then the encore - Any Way You Want It.  Not bad, but it was very rushed (the ending of the show, not the song).  Outside of the poor song selection, they were very very good.  It is a testament to what kind of musicians they are, because really, 30+ years later, these songs still rock.  My ticket's face value was $18.75, and with service charges and parking and whatnot, it was $30.50.  Definteiyl worth it for the 3 bands.

Ok, now the thing I spoke of earlier.  On my favorite food blog, SeriousEats.com, they had a thing today about the 100 foods you must eat before you die.  It says to put the ones that you have had in bold.  I am going to do just that, and I urge you to leave a comment and do the same!  (part I - part II comes tomorrow)

Tonight is the night!

Tonight is Journey and I am pumped, as I am sure you can tell.  I apologize, there really is nothing interesting going on today.  No fun links, no interesting stories.  There are a lot of Mets complaints, but I will spare you the gory details (but seriously, how long before we just start shooting people in the bullpen?  unless the starter throws a complet game, it is a guarenteed loss).  Tonight is an episode of Mythbusters about the moon landing conspiracy, and Monday Edy's will be distributing free ice cream outisde the National Building Museum.  and really, that's about it.  Big post tomorrow with Journey updates, but no photos becuase I forgot my camera at home.  Oh well.

See you tomorrow.  And remember, don't ever stop...

(Also, I don't normally do live vids due to poor quality, but this one is from my hometown of Albany, NY and is from this tour, so enjoy!)

Double Post

As I said yesterday, my entire afternoon post was deleted when I lcikced the wrong button, and then i ran out of time.  So, it got pushed back to today.

Today is tuesday, but I may confuse which day is which when referring to events from "yesterday" when I actually mean Sunday.  So just bear with me.

First, I am excited about the NFL starting.  As much as I love baseball, not as many people are as dedicated as I.  Thus, it will be nice to enjoy football with everyone.

Osi Uemenyiora on the Giants is out for the season.  Stupid preseason only asks for trouble.  Glad to see they moved Mathias Kiwanuka back to DE though.

The Olympics are over and I am a littl bit upset.  This means that I will likely be getting more sleep and be less distracted at work, but they were really fun while they lasted.

The Mets just can't seem to beat the astros (monday).

John maine might be done for the year and I am not excited about that.

One of my favorite food network shows is this one called Throwdown with Bobby Flay.  Essentially, the premise is that Flay challenges local guys to a cook-off in their best dish.  In the past, he has gone to Philly to have a cheesesteak cook-off with Tony Luke, he has had a buffalo wing challenge in Bufalo, NY, and he has challenged some guy to a battle in Cuban cooking from Miami.  The episode that aired on Sunday was battle of mules frites - a Belgian dish of muscles and french fries.  The guy who was the local champion is from DC, and they had the cook off at a bar I have been to a handful of times.  Thatwas exciting.  I always like to see things go on where I am familiar with.  Check out the website of the local guy - www.granvillemoores.com

On Sunday I watched a great special on the history of the KKK on the History Channel.  It was really quite good.  During the commercials I was flipping between that and a show about the JFK assassination, debunking the conspiracy of the magic bullet.  Also very good. and entertainig.  I am such a nerd.

Journey is Wednesday, so this is likely the last installment of the Journey countdown.  We will pack in some final vids though to get ready.

I found it funny that, when I was at the museum this weekend, the one for Native Americans is actually formally called the National Museum of the American Indian and not the native american.  Which is the more PC / acceptable term?

Mets won last night (monday night, that is) on the back of another complete game by mike pelfrey.  This guy has ace writetn all over him.

Fantasy football starts soon and I am excited.  I'd really like to win my baseball league this year as well.  Is anyone interested in doing a football league?  I think I am in 3 already, but I am always up for a challenge.

Last night I watched a movie.  newsies.  Maybe you've heard of it.  Funny to think, though, that the main cahracter went from (video 1) to (video 2).

This morning on ESPN Radio they were talking about the potential NL matchups if the playoffs started today.  Santana (NYM) vs. Sabbathia (Milwaukee) and Webb (Arizona) vs. Harden (Chicago).  Then follow that with Pedro (NYM) vs. Sheets (Milwaukee) and Haren (Arizona) vs. Zambrano (Cubs).  Finally, we would get whoever the mets 3 starter is that week (maine, perez or pelfrey - all 15 game-winners) vs. ? for milwaukee and randy johnson vs. ryan dempster.  Sure, that 3rd match up doesnt have quite the allure of the first 2 days, but games 1 and 2 in each series are ridiculous.

Last week (ok, maybe a few weeks ago) I launched a blog that was my to-do list.  I canned it because I was afraid our website might identify it as spam.  Instead, I moved it to a new (old?) location - http://razzmission.blogspot.com

Happy Birthday ramen noodles.  You helped me through college, but i hate your guts now.

I stole this from Thinking American's Blog

There is going to be a beauty pagaent for nuns.  It's supposed to disprove the myth that all nuns are old women.  Uh... aren't all nuns old women?

Love seeing Dr. K on THis Day in History.

John McCain is endorsed by McCain frozen foods.... sort of.

If you are a regular reader (or know me) you know that I am  a huge fan of Ben's Chili Bowl.  Happy 50th!

Is there anything funnier than a bunch of fat guys trying to eat Michael Phelps' breakfast, then having a swimming race?  Well, maybe, but that doesn't mean it isnt funny in the first place.

A 9-year old was banned from Little League becuase he threw too hard.  You have got to be kidding me.

And they put a new judge on American Idol.  Those who know me know I really enjoyed Idol this year, and I think this is going to throw off what works on the show.  The chemistry between the judges is what makes the show work.  Paula's nonsensical ramblings are part of what made the show popular - working to replace her will disrupt things.  Anyways, the new judge is going to be a song writer for the stars... only one slight problem - nobody on Idol is writing songs!  Its about performance, what is a song writer doing?  Whatever.

Also, there was somehtingin the paper today about how to make a hangover helper milkshake.  I am curious to find out if it works, but I am not at all interested in putting myself through the misery of a terrible hangover just to give this a go.  Here's the ingredients anyways:

1 cup Tangerine/Orange Juice
1 tbsp Lime Juice
1/2 cup Vanilla Yogurt
1/2 cup Ginger Ale (with real ginger - like Canada Dry)
A spring of mint

Supposeldy hangovers are just really severe dehydration, and this helps - the vitamin C helps combat brain cell damage, the fructose in the juices helps speed metabolism, the ginger ale will help calm an upset stomach, and the ginger helps quell motion sickness.  Supposedly the bacteria in the yogurt helps get your digestive tract back in chemical balance.  Worth investigating, I guess.

And now, some fun videos to seal this Journey countdown!

Be Good To Yourself!

It's Friday, I am ready for the weekend.  It's been a long week and now a long day.  Nothing is being terribly cooperative.  Oh well.

Let's start out with how I spent my night last night:

Pay special attention to the slide that wins it by my boy D. Wright.  And yes, he has been my boy since he was a prospect.

DC School districts are going to PAY CASH to middle schoolers for being well-behaved and getting good grades.  Up to $100 a month.  This literally makes me want to vomit.  Especially knowing that this is what my tax dollars are going to.  I can't even discuss this.

A woman in Japan is giving birth to her own granddaughter.  She had an egg transplant from her daughter becuase the daughter has no uterus or something.  That.  Is.  Weird.

Article in the Express today about how bus riders are generally poorer than rail riders and how DC in particular is trying to convince people to ride the bus more with fun perks like wifi and cleaner buses.  However, it said (something like) 50% of those riders of the bus make under $35k.  Wow, maybe, jut maybe, it has nothing to do with the condition of the buses that drive people away, but rather that it is those ON THE BUS that drive people away.  Unless you are kicking off the dangerous and homeless, nobody will continue to ride the bus.  This is an inherent problem with DC - it's never the fault of those dangerous people.  It is always the fault of the circumstance.  Thus, if you correct the circumstance - giving out AIDS meds, giving incentives for middle schoolers to go to class, cleaning up the physical buses - but leaving those inside?  This is the problem.  Without cleaning up the clientele, you are not going to make any progress.  Is that a bad attitude?  Yes.  Is it the truth?  Yes.  Please do not even respond to this point, I don't want to start an argument.

I read a really funny article a few weeks ago that I forgot to post about about the origin of the fist-bump.  Supposedly it started with Moises Alou (baseball plyer) peeing on his hands to keep the skin tough so he wouldn't get blisters.  Nobody would want to shake his hand, then, so they started just bumping fists.  I guess Michelle Obama likes to urinate on herself.

Why isn't USA basketball dominating as much as they should be?  Today's superstars rely so heavily on superstar treatment by NBA refs that they have a tough time repeating those situations in international play.  What do I mean?  Dwayne Wade shoots 20 foul shots a game, with 25ish points per.  Without shooting more than 5 foul shouts (becuase nobody internationally falls for the fly in out of control, flail around and throw up the ball and get a foul called trick), he is ineffective.  This is why nobody watches the NBA.  Rules change for superstars.

An interesting way to tackle a problem...

I think I might actually try this one too...

I had a few minutes, and who knew - Chet Steadman from Rookie of the Year is Obama's VP Choice?!

This might just be the best thing ever to come out - Iron Chef America video game for Wii.

I used to work in a library, so this is even funnier.   I guess they had to do away with keeping guys on staff named Gazzo who were the thumb-breakers in the past.

And now, as the title suggests, be good to yourself!  Have a good weekend everybody!

Thursdays are Boring too

Seriously, this has been a ridiculously slow week.  Lots of speculation about VP picks.  Honestly, I think it is going to be Pawlenty and Biden, although neither excites me.  Romney, Palin, Ridge, and others all bring interesting aspects to the table.  For the Dems, I think Bill Richardson or Wesley Clark would make the most sense.  Not to get too political, those are just my quick thoughts.  Barack announces tomorrow, McCain shortly after that.

Now, onto the standard stupidity.

Mets won last night again, and it made me feel good.  Mike Pelfrey threw a complete game, which is awesome.  I really like where we stand right now, especially with Ryan Church about to come back.  Wagner is still hurt, and that's bad, but on the bright side we just picked up 2 not-too-exciting guys that will, at the very least, give some tired arms a rest - Al Reyes and Luis Ayala, welcome.  Funny note - I got a text message from my mom about Reyes - "I think the Mets set a new record for most guys named Reyes on one team" - Jose, Argenis, and now Al.  She is definitely right.  What's stranger: my mother sending me text messages, the fact that she sends me texts about the Mets, or the fact that she sends me texts about pretty obscure stuff about the Mets?  All weird, but not nearly as weird as the times she will call me and ask me if I caught PTI that day becuase she wasnts to discuss some of the topics.  Oh well.  My brother's friends used to joke that my household should be a reality TV show, and honestly, I can't disagree.

Super excited about this.  I am SO going.  Just add it to the list of ridiculous things I do with my time.

Penalty shots in handball just aren't even fair.

Speaking of wacky things to do - Friday I think I am going to go see a band at the Native American museum at 5:30, then head over to the Sculpture Garden for some jazz when I get bored.  This first group is actually pretty funny - they describe themselves as "tradition-infused electronica."  Nice, right?  We'll see how it goes.

I think Sunday I will go check out an exhibit about the Negro Leagues and another one about how the 1968 DC riots helped shape the city.  Although the Washingotn Historical Society really isn't very good, it's close to me, free, and at the very least, somewhat interesting.

Saturday is a crazy, bang-up madness housewarming party for Andy.  I have been designated Toastmaster General, and I will hold the office to the highest of standards.

This band was featured in the Express today and is so weird, it is worth checking out.  Scandinavian Folk Music with metal?  Interesting.

I hate to be a conspiracy theorist, and I really really don't like those who are, however, this needs to be addressed.  In case you are a regular reader, you know that I love the Olympics.  But things are a little sketchy.  Yes, China has far and away the largest team and the biggest talent pool to derive its athletes.  However.  Have you noticed that any event involving judging automatically is going to the Chinese?  This is not to say that the Chinese are not the best at, say, Gymnastics, because they are, but they win everything with judging.  They won the bronze (along with the gold) in the women's vault despite the girl FALLING.  There was a chinese floor exercise in the all-around that the commentators outright said should have deductions here here and here, then received 10s.  I have been watching quite a bit of diving over the last few days, and the same thing happened - "ok notice the knees are apart, the feet are not perfect and the entry is not perfect."  Then a 10.  Seems awfully strange.  Then, beyond that, as my roommate noted - do you ever see an American judge in those competitions?  I saw one Americna judge in the women's 10M platform last night, but that was the first one I have seen.  The point that really made me raise a red flag was inlast night's track competition - Wallace Spearman, the American, was DQed for stepping on the line.  That's fine - a clear-cut rule.  His 3rd place finish was erased.  Strange, then, that this incident was caught by the judges but the guy 2 lanes over, who finished 2nd and was not American, was not identified as having stepped on the line until the US filed a complaint.  Eventually, and guys who originally finished 2nd and 3rd were DQed, and Americans filled those spots.  I am not crying conspiracy necessarily, but it smells a little fishy.  Not even the anti-american stuff, but the pro chinese?  It wouldn't hurt to have the Chinese become an Olympic powerhouse.  Just some food for thought.

Some really funny junk before the Journey countdown...

Now, Journey countdown continues with another non-Journey song.  I know I've posted this before, and no, it isn't Journey.  But it is an excuse to get Steve Perry into this blog, and considering how awesome he is, I think it is only appropriate.

Boring Wednesday

Today is slow in all news.  I have nothing really to talk about.  Mets won, Phils won.  We stay up 1 1/2 games.

A woman is suing the AARP for age discrimination.  She feels she has been passed up for jobs for being too old - 63.  Irony.

Turns out that Big Foot thing I reported a few days ago turns out to be a hoax.  It was a gorilla costume in an ice block.

I want to go to the last concert at the Native American Museum in DC on Friday.  Should be a good weekend.

While I was writing my notes, I was watching the Serbia-US volleyball game, and it was awesome.

Hilarious.  And painful-looking.

I am still a 5 year old, but good to know.

I hate to be that guy, but is it really necessary to extradict the 86 year old former Nazi?  Dude can barely walk.  Then again, bring him to jsutice.

I may be cheap and sometimes a little crazy, but this takes the cake.

Dinner: Impossible returns tonight on Food Network.  There is a new host - Michael Symon from the Next Iron Chef - becuase the last guy lied on his resume.  Whatever, still an entertaining show.

A friend's cousin was the 50,000,000 fan to enter Camden Yards (where the Orioles play) last night.  He won $50k and season tickets for 5 years.  Very cool.

Callin Out Her Name, I'm Dreamin!

Since I missed yestreday's post due to some real work, today I am doing double-duty.  The only problem is that, really, nothing interesting happened today.  So it's mostly yesterday's posts and a healthy dose of linkage.  Let's get started, shall we?

Awesome weekend.  Friday I hung out and was productive.  Saturday morning I ate some killer chocolate chip pancakes for breakfast, then hit the road to go tubing out in Harper's Ferry with a solid group of individuals.  There were 13 of us total and it was a really good time, some brew dogs and a large river doesn't sound like a good combo, but it really was relaxing and a lot of fun.  At only an hour and fifteenish from DC and $25?  Very awesome day.  Good sunburn too, which is always good.

Saturday night went and hung out with thge same group and just watched the Olympics.  Michael Phelps is an animal.

Sunday woke up, went to church, ate a pretty acceptable cheese quesadilla despite extremely low expectations (all I had was american and mozarella cheese... not ideal).  Then, the massive grocery shop.  Since I don't have a car, I have to take the Metro to the grocery store.  I have a Giant right around the corner from me, but it is small and extremely ghetto, so I opt for the brand new facitility in Columbia Heights.  I bring a backpack and a duffle bag (I probably look homeless, I know) to carry my junk back.  Since I hadn't gone to the store in months, it was quite a bit of shopping.  Upon checking out and starting to load up my bags.... I realize, there is absolutely no way in hell that I manage to carry all of this stuff home.  I'm between a rock and a hard place.  Ihave foods that need to be kept cold, and there are somehow, mysteriously, no cabs in sight.  I have to whip out the phone, embarrassed and defeated, calling anyone with a car and in the general region.  Attempt 3 finally got me Alison and Gertrue, my savior and chariot.  I have been known to endlessly mock Gertrude, Alison's 1988 Buick, covered in dirt, collapsing ceiling, roaring (literally) engine, and now it's newest feature - the crushed grill/hood from a little fender-bender action.  I am now putting my foot in my mouth, as it saved me much difficulty.  Thank you Gertrude, I must now accept you despite your shortcomings.  Not everybody can be beautiful like my whip, Agnes.  Or my old ride, the Ultimate Warrior.  But that's neither here nor there.  In conclusion, I am an idiot, but likely will not have to go to the grocery store until I move out (10 weeks, give or take).

I am watching the women's Olympic volleyball, and one of the girls on the Chinese team is drinking something that seriously looks like pond water.  yuck.

Speaking of the Olympics, i watched Brazil play soccer this morning, and Ronaldhino really is that good.  Wow.

I watch all of the Olympics sports, and I love it.  Great stuff.

My bromance Jake is moving back on Friday and I am super excited.

Olympics commentators are awesome - these guys are so good with the versatility (going one sport to another) and with the foreign names - I am very impressed.

Red Bull may be killing me, but I love it.

Shawn Kemp is coming back.  He needs to pay those 45 children child support somehow.  (But in all seriousness, it's well into the teens, all from separate mothers).

Jared Leto's band is getting sued, but it's cool becuase he was Paul Allen in American Psycho, one of my favorite movies.

Yesterday was the 88th anniversary of the passage of the women's suffrage act.  This was the motivation for absolutely one of my favorite segments ever of the man Show.  Actually...why don't you just watch it...

Being young myself, this is an issue that I am very passionate about - the drinking age.  I do not want to get into the politics and stupidity of it, but I am happy to see the argument being raised again.

Ben's Chili Bowl has a book coming out, and I have to be honest - I am really pumped.  This is very cool.  I love Ben's and I love history - it will be perfect.

Spekaing of Ben's, they are celebraitng their 50th anniversary this week, and I find it very cool.  I am going to try to get to at least one of these events.

Dolphins can walk?!  And teach?

ESPN recently ran a series of polls about who the greatest player in franchise history was for all of the teams in the NFL.  A cool feature worth taking a look at.

Also, a review of my Sunday evening out to dinner.

After speaking with several of my coworkers, confidantes, associates, fans, friends, sidekicks, and any other word I can come up wit to mean "someone associated with me", I lowered my standards a bit for the next installment of restaurant week.  I went to Ceiba Restaurant in DC, a Latin American place that I had heard excellent things about.  I went with 3 others, of which I am probably the least knowledgable about food, so that was fine with me.  It gave me an opportunity to learn a little somehting.  So anyways, this was a little bit less dressy than the Caucus Room, but more hip.  Having been to some other "hip" places, I knew what to expect - all presentation, small plates, good but not fantastic food.  I was fine with that, in this case.  It's a Sunday night and I was looking forward to it.

To start, I had heard that the cocktails there were excellent.  Problem #1 - I don't find a cocktail to be terribly refreshing with a meal.  The girls had mojitos, a pisco (something foreign) sour, and a ... well Ihave no idea what the third drink was.  I opted for a Spanish beer.  It was quite nice - not a stout but a good, thick dark beer.  That was exactly what I was interested in.  Our waiter was really really gay.  Not like there's anything wrong with that.

Anyways, moving on, I ordered the Bermuda Fish Chowder to start, the Gaucho Ribeye for entree and the banana caramel mouse cake for dessert.  I kind of cheated because, really, the ribeye was nothing groundbreaking, but that's what I ws seriously in the mood for.  I am a little mad at myself for not being adventurous, but whatever, I survived.

The Fish Chowder came, and it was completely not what I expected.  I was thinking a white, cream-based chowder with white fish in it.  Not at all - it was a broth-based soupy thing, with all sort of fish in it.  It was absolutely delicious as wlel.  Good kick, nice, tender vegetables and fish in the chowder, and a very nice flavor.  It wasn't too hot, and I really enjoyed it.  With the meal they brought out two miniature beakers with rum and something else in them.  I guess they were "accents" for the dish, as explained by the waiter when I looked puzzled.  It was not just thrown out there, assuming I was clueless.  He waited until I was looking clueless before explaining.  That's the way it should be handled.  Two of the girls had shrimp ceviche and the fourth in our party had a yellow tomato gazpacho. All said they were delicious.

Then the entrees came.  As I complained about alst week, the dishes are never as large as you would like at fancy places.  It happens.  However, my ribeye was GIGANTIC.  Probably close to 12+ ozs, with a mountain of fried onion and chimichuri sauce.  Again, it was delicious.  The chimichurri had just the right amount of flavor and heat, the meat was perfectly cooked, tender, juicy, and the onions really hit the spot.  This was a HUGE dish which I actually had some difficulty finishing.  The girls had more adventure dishes - tuna, grilled pork tenderlion, and pork shank "feijoda".  The tuna scares me - I cant think about eating something that looks purple like that.  Regardless, it was said to be wonderful.  The pork was complimented in both cases - the first was a bbq pulled pork that was not so much bbq or pulled, but generally delicious looking.  tHe latter was sort of a giant piece of pork in a black bean and who knows what else stew - also looked and smelled great.  That diner said it was fantasic as well.

Desserts were great, all around.

I really have to hand it to Ceiba - this meal was really excellent and should be what Restaurant Week is all about.  Sure, we may have been treated a little bit lesser than if we were full-scale patrons, but we were not belittled.  The staff was courteous and the food was really very very good.  I had feared that presentation would have played too large a part, but such was not the case at all.  It was just, all around, great.  Best restaurant week experience I have had.  In fact, as this week should have done for everywhere I went, I now want to go back there.  The other 3 I have gone to (Bobby Vans, Caucs Room, Oya) - I doubt I would ever return.  I was not wowed for the price.  Ceiba, on the other hand, was a great experience.  Strongly recommended.

And now, to close out this post, 2 more additions to the Journey countdown since I missed yesterday.  Take it away Steve Perry.

Not the light Friday I was hoping for...

Got assaulted with work today instead of having a nice, easy Friday.  Stupid kevin went out of town, so I got stuck doing his job in addition to my own.  Stupid Stupid Kevin.

Oh well.

Need to get moving on my fantsy football leagues.  ASAP.

Mets won alst night, Phils lost.  Mets are in 1st place by a game.  Looks good to me.  Weathering the storm with the worst bullpen in baseball history and still being in first?  Yeaaa.....

I need to start looking for a new apartment pretty badly.

Clue, the board game, is being updated for the new millennium with personas and first names, etc.  I am not happy.  Give me Professor Plum, Colonel Mustard, Mrs. White, Ms. Scarlett and the gang and I'm game for hours.  I don't need new weapons or a guest house to kill Mr. Body in.  I don't like updting a classic.  Keep it the way it was.

Have you heard the problems with the Chinese gymnastics team?  One girl is supposed to turn 14 in October but somehow, mysteriously, the papers submitted to the IOC have her turning 16 instead?  Sketchy, eh?  This girl still had baby teeth.  You have got to be kidding me.

Michael Phelps is an animal.  I am definitely rooting for him, but calling him the greatest Olympian ever is a stretch.  Some spoprts only have 1 medal to be had, like, say, Judo.  Jut because swimming awards for eveyr single event doesnt mean that the most medals means you're the best.  I think your ability to beat the field makes you the best - or breaking 6 world records (so far).  That makes you the best.

Last night I went to the Caucus Room.  I was super excited, and had an idea what to expect.  I was a little disappointed, but satsfied.  We arrive with a group of 6.  We are all in our young 20s, but were all in business attire.  The place is classy, and we expected that.  One thing that drives me bananas is when a waiter in particular belittles you - treats you like some sort of imbecile.  Listen, just because I am young does not mean that I am a fool - you dont have to go down the line explaining each and every item on the menu.  Don't think you have to go bit by bit through the wine list - assume we know what we're doing and answer questions if we have them.  Instead, we have a waiter practiaclaly insulting us to go over the top with his explanations.  Not his fauilt, and it was advantageous for most of the group, but that should be by request, not your default.  Would you have spent time explaining au poivre or the differences in wines to a couple in their 50s?  No, of course not.  From there, we get IDed for a bottle of wine.  Yes, I was offended.  Do I look young?  Certainly.  I could pass for under 21, and I know that.  However.  It is downright insulting to ID someone at a classy establishment when ordering wine with dinner.  Do you really think we're trying to scam the system?  That one glass of wine per person is really going to be breaking laws left and right eh?  We all had to prove that we were over 20 years old, despite our attire, our demeanor, and our appearance.  I almost called the waiter out on it and told him it was rude - I didn't, but I considered it.

Anywyas, the menu was somewhat limited for Restaurant Week, but I knew wwhat I wanted and went with it.  The deal is 3 courses for $35.08.  My first thought is that a salad is the same everywhere we go - this was about trying something new, so I went with the fire roasted yellow tomato gazpacho with shrimp.  I am no connossieur of gazpacho, and was a little let down.  The flavor was incredibly strong, and as one of my fellow diners said, "this tastes like a campfire."  There was a littttle bit too much smoky flavor, but it wasn't terrible.  That was the nature of the dish, and I just wasn't really prepared for it.  When ordering our main course, we were also offered the option of getting a sides for ther table (and this is how it was presented....) "You can get mashed potatos, or... oh, we have french fries.  Do you guys want that?"  This is belittling.  What are we, 4 years old?  You have to offer us french fries?  Come on, that is insulting to your patrons.  Anywyas, being cheap, we went with no sides.  However, when our food came, they would have been nice.  I had a sirloin with roasted garlic and syrah glaze, and it was very tasty.  It was a little small - probably about 8 or 9 oz - but it was perfectly cooked and very delicious.  I really cannot fault anything about tht.  The roasted garlic added a nice sweetness to it, and the syrah glaze (I dont even know what that is) was really nice.  It was rich, the meat was tender, etc.  No faults about that.  Not all that much food, but very good from what I had.  Presentation does not men much to me, so I did not take note of it.  One of my friends had a steak with a cognac sauce, and he said it was wonderful.  The girls had salmon, and they said it was quite delicious as well.  Entrees get a thumbs up.

Dessert was the choiuce between raspberry sorbet or pineapple upside down cake.  I went with the PUDC, and it was excellent.  Very sweet, nice sauce with it, and a plentiful amount of pineapples.  It was really good, and I highly recommend it.  Those who had the sorbet siad it was just fine as well.

The place was really really nice, and we were obviously the youngest people there.  But that was no reason for us to be treated like second class citizens, as I descirbed.  However, I really can't complain that much - this was a $90 meal that I paid half of that for.  Enjoyable, but the treatment was a little demeaning.  Overall, a good time, and I would be curious to see how they treated me in a different circumstance.  Would I have been IDed if it wasn't restaurant week?  Would I have been treated with more respect if I was in a group of older people?  Who knows.  I give it a thumbs in the middle.  Food was good, service, not the best.

Sunday is Ceiba.  Review coming on Monday.

And now, how about some light-hearted links to close out the week?

Jonah Goldberg is a political columnist and this is not a political blog.  But, he scores major points for making an entire column of Jaws referfneces.  AWESOME movie.

I have had the song from this commercial stuck in my head for days.  It's on constanttly during the Olympics coverage.

Interesting....Those Brits and their anti-social behavior.

This blog is foul, but hilarious.  Again, I am a 5 year old.

Same blog, had me laughing out loud

I guess this MUST be proof that Big Foot exists.

Sunday is International Rum Day.  Holla at chaboy.

For those regular readers of this blog, you know I love Gordon Ramsay.  This is no different.

Exposing secret identities since march 2008

Today is thursdya, and the explanation of the title will come in a few.  Just bear with me.  This week hasn't been too bad - I had Monday off for vacation, then the Mets game, and tonight restaurant week.  I find that if I can keep busy enough, I won't get bored and sick of the week.   Big plans this weekend - going tubing down the Shenendoah River on Saturday and a massive grocery shopping on Sunday.  And yes, I love to grocery shop...sort of.

It's not that I love grocery shopping so much as I love having a stocked apartment.  I also have a mild obsession with cleaning out literally every last spec of food from my place until I can replenish.  Strange?  Maybe.  Whatever.  I looked yesterday, and the last time I went for a major grocery shop (outside of the bare-essentials of milk, turkey, cheese, rolls) I did was June 23.  I think I am due for one.  Sunday it is.

This China-Japan volleyball match is absolutely awesome.  And remember, watching men's indoor volleyball is a-ok...as long as it is olympic season.

Heading to the Caucus Room tonight for some mean steaks.  Really looking forward to it.

Mets win again last night, 12-0, and the Phils lose, meaning a tie for first place.  Let's do this boys.  If we can weather the storm of Billy Wagner's injury, this team should be due to break out when he comes back.  Let's hope so.

Mark Warner is giving the keynote speech at the DNC.  You know, I try not to be political, but I think this guy is awesome.  Former Gov of Virginia who really got screwed by the ridiculous one-term rule in Virginia.  He's young, he's smart, he's charismatic, and he invented Nextel.  So he's a democrat... oh well.  I have a feeling that if he becomes President, he will give everyone push to talk phones.

A quick rant.  Please bear with me.  I read thsi morning that there is a Make DC Weird competition, where people are urged to take photos (or other means of documenting) strange occurrences to try and shake the image that DC is a conservative city.  I don't know who is putting this one, but I am seriously angry about it.  A conservative city?  Didn't this city go (something like) 97% democrat in 2004?  Wasn't it mandated that the DC city government have one opposition party member in order to stop it from being completely (as in, every single member of the city council) democrat?  Isn't this the same city with the highest income tax in the country (10.5%)?  Isn't this the city that spends its tax dollars giving out FREE AIDS drugs to poor people with the disease?  isn't this the same city with huge poverty rates, a ridiculous number of projects, and a large portion of the city on welfare?  Wasn't this the city that had a ban on guns?  Isn't this the city that has publically funded projects in the Nationals stadium, all of the Smithsonians, statues all over the place that wrre never put to vote in front of the residents, and community centers littered throughout impoverished areas?  Not to take a stance on any of these issues, but this is so far from a conservative city it is ridiculous to even mention the 2 in the same sentence.  As another TH employee said, this city is a liberal graveyard.

I am cheap, bt these methods of saving money are down right absurd.

Arby's is running a new deal where you can choose any combination of 5 items from the value menu for $5.95.  Take a look at www.arbys.com.  I'm thinking Arby's indeed.

Democrat, Republican, whatever.  I like history.  And articles about history.

The Jackal was caught today in 1994.  It spawned a great movie.

America's Food Network pioneer, Julia Childs, was actually a WWII spy.  I love it.  I am actually going to go to the Archives today to check this stuff out.

Normally, I love to tear apart these "what college is like" "what to expect in college" "college survival guide" etc.  In this case, it is how to decorate your place in college.  But this article is surprisingly accurate.  Kudos.

Courtesy to the one and only KG, there are 20 ways to improve the Olympics.

And the Journey countdown continues.  And if you're curious about the title, take a look at the bass player in this video.  Since today's theme (ok, we discussed it once) is exposed spies, here is a fun one for you.  Maybe not a spy so much as a past identity, but you get the idea.  You may recognize him as one of the judges from American Idol, Mr. Randy Jackson.  Also, this is one of my favorite Journey songs and it may be a bit lesser-known than, say, Don't Stop Believin.  Give it a listen.

It's Wednesday

I am exhausted due to a late night last night.

First, the baseball game.  Went to the Nats-Mets game last night.  Mets won 4-3 in a good game, albeit the game ended on a questionable call where Damion Easley may or may not have been hit with a pitch to drive in the winning run.  Regardless, he bullpen did not blow it, which is monumental.

Game went about 3 hours, ending about 10:15.  Got home from the game around 10:50.  Mind you, my bedtime is normally 10:30.  Then I came home and was all fired up from the game, not to mention that I needed to eat dinner still.  Opted for no dinner, but instead watched some of the Olympics.  Couldn't skip out on Michael Phelps' quest for greatness, so I was up until about 11:45, a solid hour later than normal.  had an energy drink this morning, but it only could get me so far.  Oh well, a fun night.  Especially on the heels of a vacation, I can pull it off well enough.  So, anyways, Olympics re awesome.  I am loving that green line in the swimming for the World Records.  Definitely makes things more fun.

I am a hug fan of volleyball.  Watched it this morning and enjoyed every minute of it.  Very exciting.

I think Tropic Thunder has potential for greatness or could be awful and a huge letdown.  I might invest in it.  I'm not sure yet.

Isaac Hayes died over the weekend.  Sad.  But then again, for anyone who thinks he was a visionary, remember what happened in his last public moment: he got upset with South Park for making fun of scientology and quit.  This from the guy who played Chef when they outright made fun of Mormons, Christians, Jews, Catholics, Muslims, blacks, whites, poor people, country people... everyone and everything.  Suddenly the rules change when you're the butt of the joke?  Not cool, Black Moses.

Today marked the anniversary of a divided Berlin.  Back in college I went on a week-long vacation to berlin.  It was cold, but really awesome.  Tons to do, tons to see, good people.  Highly recommended.

My girl Rachael tops the list, of course.

I'm such a 5 year old.

Credit to my coworkers for this one - the most unhealthy foods for you in the country.

has anyone else noticed that I just kind of arbitrarily assign what the link applies to?  Like the one above?  "unhealthy foods for you" is not exactly the iodeal selection.  Whatever.

The Mick died today.  Sad day for all those kids growing up in the 50s and 60s.  Except for my family, who hated the Yankees with all their hearts.  Let's go Dodgers!  (and in a modern twist, the Mets).  Fun fact: the Mets logo/color scheme is actually a combination of the new York Giants and Brooklyn Dodgers.  Orange from the Giants and blue from the Dodgers, plus the NY logo that the Giants used.  The Mets were created tio fill the void left when the Dodgers and Giants moved out west in 1957.  A sad day.  But I digress...

The Journey countdown is still on.  Two weeks away.
