My World Info

Early Post?

Yes, I am posting a bit early today as I am not feeling terribly well.  How is this relevant to writing a blog?  I do my daily "process" in a particular order, and since I feel terrible, I blistered through my pre-blog work in case I have to leave early.  Thus, the blog, too, comes early today.  (EDIT: I never finished it at the time that I started it, so it's debuting around regular time).

I'm sure you all cared quite a bit about that.

Anyways, onto some substance.  There was much argument between myself and others regarding my recent string of Office commentaries, where all of the Office fanboys (and girls) say that I am viewing the show with an inherent dislike for the show.  This is completely off-base - I try to watch the show without letting my fan-ness get in the way of seeing that the writing is outright poor.  Since the writers' strike, the writing is sloppy and has no contineity.  (Wow I butchered that word, but for whatever reason, my brain is refusing to process the correct spelling.)  Furthermore, the characters are not enthralling or engaging anymore - they are stupid.  Nobody can relate to Dwight or Michael at this point, and that is what makes people become interested in characters.

Andy has just put an offer on a house, but also just purchased Hannah Montana bed sheets and Zoey 101 window drapes.  Strange.

Speaking of Hannah Montana - Miley has been all the rage the last few days.  I don't disagree, I think it is an intriguing story.  This case, though, is different from that of Lindsay, Brittney, etc. in that we thought her father wasn't crazy - unlike the elder Spears and Lohan.  We knew Lindsey's parents were nuts when her father was arrested for the umpteenth time.  We knew Brittney's mother was insane when she would go to parties with her daughter and dress like a bigger prostitute.  Billy Ray was a rock star in his own world - he didn't need to live vicariously through his daughter.  Besides, while Miley was a wholesome every-girl, her dad was a caring every-man.  He was actually considered a good family man up until this point.  Maybe this really was just a slip-up in judgment.  Who knows.

What isn't a slip-up in judgment, along similar lines, is this.  I feel dirty just looking at that.  Disney is so classy.  (h/t Katie)

Mets won last night in 11.  David Wright hit the walk-off single to score the winning run.  A win is a win.

Idol was on last night.  It was .... Neil Diamond night?  Seriously?  Oh well, you take what you can get.  Although Idol really has become more of a marketing machine than a means to produce stars - from the product placement of the judges to the stupid Chevy commercials that the contestants record - now its a means to also push stars' new material and tours.  Mariah Carey has a new cd coming out, so does Neil Diamond.  Shocking.

Regardless, the final 5 each did 2 songs.  Jason was awful - he is just a dude sitting on a beach with an acoustic guitar singing at this point, not a top 5 idol personality.  Brook is nuts.  Flat out crazy.  You can see it in her eyes.  But she was ok - just ok.  It is apparent that she is not a very good guitar player, though, and should probably just leave it behind.  Archuleta has a very good voice, no doubt, but he is clearly immature in his song selection and performance.  He is awkward on stage and even had his voice crack during his second song.  "Sweet Caroline" is a very well-known song, but the point of it is to have these slow, building verses that lead to the big crescendo of a chorus.  Instead, Archuleta decided to over-sing every single note of the song and make the climax strangely anti-climatic.  Whatever - he may be a hero to 12 year old girls swooning over him, but he really isn't that good.

Syesha is a star.  She really is going to do somehting after this show, likely on Broadway.  Her voice is fantastic - probably the best in the competition - and she has a lot of personality on stage.  I think she has actually gotten better as the season has gone on now that she has brought some acting and dancing elements into it.  Oh yea, and shes an absolute babe.  She will have a future somewhere, for sure.

David Cook was again the best of the night.  His first song was great - the chorus really pulled it together.  Simon said it, and I completely agree -  you could release his songs today and they would be hits, even though they are covers of Neil Diamond songs that are 35 years old.  Cook is that good.  On the same note of Simon, you can tell he knows that Cook should win, especially in terms of marketability.  He constantly tears down Archuleta and loves Cook, which he should.  Cook's arrangements and performances are much more mature - much more marketable.  Simon, the record executive who grants the contract to the winner, sees dollar signs in David Cook.  Idol missed on Chris Daughtry - Simon won't let another money-maker of that caliber slip through his fingers.

Paula is retarded, by the way.  Judging Castro on his second song without him performing it yet?  Smooth.  Some people say the show is predetermined and she said the script even though it hadn't happened yet.  Some think she was judging him off of his auditions.  I think it's a possibility that the show is pre-taped and aired out of order, and she misspoke.  Or she's just an idiot.  The latter two of which are very possible.

"Historians want Adolf Hitler's infamous manifesto 'mein kampf' to be republished in Germany before its copyright lapses in 2015.  Though the book is available in the English-speaking word, its publication has been banned in Germany since World War II."  (Express) - I agree with the historians here - this is a part of history, no matter how terrible.  Should a book about slavery not be allowed in schools because it is racist?  It's still a part of our history and should be taught.  Understandably, Mein Kampf is not just a book about Nazis - it is the Nazi manifesto, yet, as I learned on a vacation to Berlin a few years ago, the Germans really don't like to acknowledge their history being intertwined with that of Nazi Germany.  It is certainly not "forgotten" or overlooked, but rather they have certainly distanced themselves from the fact that the German people were all Nazis for over a decade.  This was out of fear, absolutely, but the fact remains - it was a large part of their history.

Eliot Spitzer's call girl Ashley Dupree is suing Girls Gone Wild for $10 million, claiming that:
1.) they exploited her image and name to advertise racy videos following the Spitzer debacle
2.) She was 17 when she was on the video and too young to sign legally binding contracts
3.) She was drunk when she agreed to be filmed
4.) she "did not understand the magnitude of her actions, nor that her image and likness would be displayed in videos and DVDs."

Do I even have to comment on this?  All i have to say is.... riiiiight.  Oh, that paycheck you collected to drink and get naked and be filmed was never intended to be shown on video or sold.  How dare they?!  And oh, she was legally allowed to sign that contract for the 5 years since it was filmed.  Only now did she realize that she was 17 and illegal and drunk.  Riiiight.

Troy Tulowitzki is injured and killed my fantasy team.  His bathwater just isn't quite as appetizing this year.  (anybody..?)

47% of Americans feel they are struggling in life.  Isn't this mildly contradictory to the study from only a few months ago that said thjat 87% of Americans were happy in life?

And now, we end on a video:

Oh She's Just Being Miley

So that Miley Cyrus - Annie Liebowitz thing really is intense.  THey're both nuts, and if we throw in Billy Ray, they can have a whole nutso party together.  It takes two to tango...but not when one of them is a minor.  Billy Ray - you are to blame just as much as the other two.  Maybe that mullet corrupted your brain for parenting.

Mets got rained out yesterday.

Clemens is a pedophile?  He is already screwed in the public forum.  Doesn't matter if it's true or not.

Stupid people on the Metro drive me bananas.  I missed my connection train today by about 15 seconds because the guy in front of me was too lazy to actually walk up the escalator.  The time lost standing behind him (because he stood in the middle of the escalator and could not be passed) was the difference between making it to work at 7:30 and 7:40.  This happens so often it actually makes me sick.

Is this Barry Zito contract the worst in baseball history?  He just got moved to the bullpen 1 year and 1 month into a 7 year, $126 million deal.  Back-loaded, no less.  Buster Olney debates whether this or the Mike Hampton 8 seasons of injury was a bigger waste.  Thoughts?

TH co-worker KG started his own blog.  I especially recommend the bio.  I might actually steal that part about legally changing my name.  Booyakasha.

Back to this Miley Cyrus thing, I was reminded of a classic scene from South Park a few weeks ago.  One of the episodes from this season was about Brittney Spears and her downfall, and how this is a form of human sacrifice in modern culture.  (Yes, South Park is much deeper than a bunch of 4th graders swearing at each other.  Watch it - you'll be surprised).  The whole point of the episode is that we are a sick culture for literally pushing her over the edge and taking pleasure out of watching her fall from grace.  At the end of the episode, once Brittney has died, they introduce the new "it" girl target - Miley Cyrus.  They "harvest" someone from young star to icon then tear them down.  Unfortunately, this is all too true.  This nude-photo problem is the beginning of the end for Ms. Cyrus.  Here's a clip.

The whole episode was a reference to Children of the Corn, I think.

The NY Times ran a story about wrestling since the death of Chris Benoit today.  As much as I like to see positive publicity for wrestling and WWE, please, NYT, would it kill you to get some facts straight?  The mistakes range from saying wrestlers were suspended in the early 90s for steroids (completely wrong) to getting the end of the actual match between Barack and Hillary wrong.  Is it so much to ask that they get some of it right?

The Office was decent this week - not great, not bad.  I don't want to get into it too much, but again, none of the episode took place in the actual office environment.  Michael and Dwight have completely jumped the shark and are now just extremely strange, unbelievable characters.  The rest of the office turning of Jim and Pam was very weird and out-of-left field.  Toby?  Same thing - where did that come from?  And most of all, the writers have just abandoned all sense of subtlety and ability to plant information without exposing it completely.  Everything is too straight-forward.  No longer are Michael and Dwight just weird guys - they are so over-the-top it's not funny.  Ryan didn't just have the seeds planted of his drug problem - they threw it right out there to end the episode.  The writing is just sloppy at this point.  There is no forward thinking, just cheap laughs.  They are pulling the trigger on everything way too soon (for example, 2 episodes ago, Jan was a central figure.  Now?  Not even mentioned).  This situation is case in point: Andy was interested in Angela but she had no interest in him.  Then there is the writers' strike and suddenly they're dating.  No explanation, no reasoning, no real statement about it until the third episode of them being a couple.  Where did that come from?   Absolutely no continuity.

Tomorrow is $.31 scoops of ice cream at Baskin Robins.  Yea babe.

I was going to write a post about xenophobia in wrestling as a part of a larger social commentary, but this post is far too long for a throw-in with other information.  It will get its own post down the road, fear not.

The NY Post put out a list of the 35 greatest television shows of all time, and they are so far off it is absurd.  No MASH, no Giligan's Island... Simpsons and Sex and the City back-to-back?  The Cosby Show at 34?  Star Trek at 27?  Seinfeld at 23?  The West Wing at 5?  24 at 10?  TWIN PEAKS at 9?  Who wrote this list?!  Oh, and most of all, THE SOPRANOS IS THE GREATEST SHOW OF ALL TIME?!  You can't be serious.

And now, a fun music video to end a post with too much anger:

Not a lot of real info

Just some short information and some links for today.
First, went to the Wizards-Cavs playoff game on Sunday.  Really awesome game, Cavs won by 3.  LeBron really is that good.

Mets won 2 of 3 against the Braves, so that is good.

I crushed Kate in my fantasy league this week, again putting me in first place.  My rotation is unbelievable and will eat your children.  Harang, Dice-K, Gallardo, Randy Johnson, Tim Hudson, Zack Grienke.  JJ Putz closing.

Miley Cyrus took semi-nude (she is covered, dont worry) photos with Annie Liebowitz.  Now shes mad because Disney is mad at her because she is 15.  Note to parents, don't let Annie Liebowitz near your kids.

NFL Draft was this weekend, and to be honest, I was not terribly interested.  This year's draft didn't have a ton of star power.  Giants made out pretty well though, so no real complaints.  I just think the whole draft thing may have peaked last year with the drama.

Thanks to Serious Eats for this one - the literal Rick Roll.

Tomorrow is National Free Cone Day at Ben and Jerry's.  Don't miss out on enjoying some excellent ice cream while being ultra-cheap.

The Miracle Fruit? - A very interesting read about a fruit which made everything taste sweet, discovered in Africa and marketd in the 60s and 70s that was mysteriously pulled from shelves in 1974 by the FDA.  I had never heard of this before, so it was pretty intriguing.  I am sure this is not the full story, but worth a look anyways.

Tomatoes are good for the skin.  For someone genetically allergic to the sun (aka being Irish), this is epic.

Today is the anniversary of the Chernobyl disaster.  If you are not familiar with it - go read up.

A Shake-up

I have had a complaint or two or a thousand that my posts are a little too formulaic.  TV, Mets, College hoops, and complaints.  Well that's how I live my life.  Whoo!  Or somehting like that.  But today, to buck the trend, I am going to discuss a new topic, which may excite some and bore others.

I like lists.  I like to make to-do lists.  I like to make grocery lists weeks in advance.  I like to make lists of what dinners I can cook so that I can be prepared.  During the course of the day, I like to list the topics that I want to discuss in this blog.  I like to list my TV programming in this blog.  I have all of my "to-read" items in a list in my favorites.  I like lists, what can I say?

One of my classic lists is a little thing called the DC Hidden Highlights tour - a walk through the city, focusing on some of the lesser known yet equally awesome aspects of the city.  The National Portrait Gallery, the Botanic Gardens, and the Old Post Office are some of the items.  Certain exhibits should be seen, but in "quick hit" fashion - the Hope Diamond, the Shaw Memorial, the Ruby Slippers.  Others need an extended stay, as is the case for Ben's Chili Bowl or the Nationals Park.  I happen to quite enjoy this city, and I like to know a lot about it.  Sue me.

I also have been known for my list of personal Hidden Highlights - the simple pleasures in life that just make your day that much better.  For me?  Freshley washed sheets, a new toothbrush, and cheese platters.  Especially cheese platters.  Some others have said having a beer to cool down after a hot day, a new pair of socks, or hearing their favorite song on the radio when they wake up.  I know there are readers out there - what are your top 3 hidden highlights?  What are the simple things in life that make your day better?

But today's list is not either of the above.  Thanks to TH's Kevin Glass for giving me the idea for this list.  I want to combine some of my favorite things - TV (sort of) and lists.  Since TV is too easy and too unstable, making a list of movies is much easier.  But favorite movies is too easy.  Instead, how about our top underrated movies?  This list is in no particular order and will seemingly be random.  I wrote them down as they came to me.  Feel free to leave comments with your thoughts or your additions to the list.

Kevin starts this list, since it was his idea: Jurassic Park.  According to him, "every time this movie is on tv, I can't turn it off."  He is right, and that is a major factor in a great underrated movies.  All-time great films are not always on tv - but that "can't turn it off" level is always on.

The Rock.  I've spoken about it before, and it has been my favorite movie for years.  I've probably seen in 100 times, but it is still awesome.  Another "can't turn it off when you flip through the stations" movies.

Three Amigos.  I hadn't seen this movie in probably 10 years until about last summer, when I found it on Comedy Central one day.  Absolutely hysterical that too few people of the younger generation are familiar with.  Martin Short may be a top 5 underrated comedy actor.

Coming to America.  Absolutely one of my favorites that was legendary for a particular generation, but unknown to others.  A classic.

PCU.  See America, Coming to.  Think "Old School" minus 10 years.  Or Animal House + 15.

The Faculty.  A really underrated horror/action/thriller film from the late 90s.  Also featuring a top 5 underrrated character actor: Robert Patrick.  You may know him as t-1000.

Scream.  Really excellent film that truly revolutionized the horror genre.  Does not get the play it deserves for what it did for film.  Watch it horror movies from before it, then after it, and you can see Scream's influence in all of the latter.

Rookie of the Year.  Ok, it was a terrible movie.  But it was on last night and there is just something so excellent about Henry Roengartner and Chet Stedman that gives it that "can't turn away" factor.

On that note, I hate kids movies.  I really do.  I want to reach into the scream and slap these little (expletive deleted) whenever they make some snide remark.  If any kid acted like that, his mother would have (should have?) done just that.

All that talk about the T-1000 got me thinking.  Terminator 2 really was an awesome movie.  Yes, it is considered awesome by just about everyone, but it still doesn't get the credit it deserves.  This movie is 16 years old.  Turn it on today, and it's still fantastic and believable (in a movie sense).  An absolute gem.

Blown Away was anothe really good action film from a lost generation (that 94-96 range).  It's about an IRA terorrist bomb maker guy who wants to blow up the US.  Tommy Lee jones was in his element here.

Half Baked was on tv the other day and I still laughed out loud.

The Warriors.  Late 70s (1979 I think) action/chase movie about the gangs of NYC.  It is a good movie, it's based loosely around the 300, and is so 70s its laughable.  It really is epic, though, to see how different NY was before Giuliani cleaned it up.

Vision Quest.  Do I even have to elaborate?  Matthew Modine is a high school wrestler trying to be the best.  This movie is the best.

American Pie.  I know, I know.  This is respected - how can it be underrated?  Much the way Scream and T2 were, this movie does get a lot of play.  But not enough.  Think about it - this made the careers of Sean William Scott, Jason Biggs, and Tara Reid.  It revived Henry Roengartner.  It gave Eugene Levy something to do for the next 10 years.  Oh yea, and it invented the term MILF.

Enemy of the State.  Will Smith and Gene Hackman?  Well, it proves the Cain-Hackman theory (see PCU), but it was also a good action / conspiracy film.  Good chases, good twists and turns and a fun movie to watch, even if it was only part way through.

American History X.  If you want one of the best movies ever, watch this.  Too bad it wasn't as respected as it should be.  Really powerful movie about race, etc, and made Edward Norton a superstar, which he deserved.  Also had Edward Furlong in it, which you may remember as John Connor from T2.

Primal Fear.  Creepy, awesome movie with Edward Norton.  I am sensing a trend here with movies I really like and actors that appear in them...

What do you think?

ARBY's BUYS WENDY's!!!!

The Heavens have opened and billionaire Nelson Peltz wants to buy Wendy'!  Good God Almighty!!  Now, we can enjoy Beef n Cheddar sandwiches and a frosty at the same time

Seriously though, this is reasonably interesting.  Wendy's has always been my favorite, although I have not had as much exposure to Arby's as I would have liked.  The real questions remain: why isn't Arby's owner named Arby?  And will they still have the classy dining area that Wendy's boasts?!

NEXT!  Idol was on last night, and I missed the whole thing.  The elimination shows (or as Tony Kornheiser calls them - IT'S GO TIME) are pretty boring, but I am shocked, SHOCKED, that Carly was eliminated.  Rumor has it Syesha and Carly were the bottom 2 - my favorite pair of the previous night.  Clearly this is to the point where it's not about talent any more and Brook's psychos and Jason's dirty hippies will trump a good performance.  Oh well.  Still going to come down to the Davids.

For the record, there is nothing consequential or relevant in any way being discussed on this blog because it could cause a conflict-of-interest with my blog.  Thus, nothing of any importance.  Sorry.

I want to buy a Hamburger phone, but I guess it was in that fruity indy movie Juno.  Anyone who sees me with it will think I am just ripping off Juno.  In fact, I am ripping off Coming to America, a far superior movie.  Yes, I can make that claim without actually seeing Juno.  Bill Simmons' friend had the best description of it: "that cute girl who you work with who's kind of cute but kind of weird and a little bit of a hippie likes it, so you went to see it so that you could talk about it with her.  I mean, you enjoyed it, but after you woke up next to her and your room smelled like a locker room, you realized it wasn't actually a good movie after all."  That should sum up Juno.  You know what?  I might get that phone anyways, just to stick it to the stupid Juno fans.

Supposedly what a woman eats while pregnant can change the gender of a child.  (don't feel like looking for a link).  Cereal and bananas made 87% of women have boys.  Hm.  Weird.

There is now a thing called a Mosquito, which is essentially a dog whistle for teenagers.  Old people cant hear it and it's a terrible sound for teens.  They invented the equivalent-opposite (one that is brutal for old folks) years ago - it's called death metal.

There is a meeting about the Patriots Spygate on May 13th I believe.  I hope Bill Belichek goes down in flames, cheating sumbich.

Jesus Colome is the slowest pitcher ever.  Last night I went to the Nats-Mets game and he single-handedly brought the game to a screeching halt in the top of the 9th.  Absolutely brutal watching him pitch.  I think he threw 30 pitches in 20 minutes.  That "shot clock" for pitchers really needs to be enforced.

And back to the Nats-Mets game.  Justin scored awesome tickets, so we were in like the 20th row or so right behind home plate.  They had service at our seats, so that you never have to get up.  One problem - the servers were so slow and retarded it was almost not worth it.  Not standing on line is nice, but having to get up at least 5x every half inning to let the servers serve something down your row was equally obnoxious.  I'm pretty sure the guy in front of us also spent more than half thje game standing up in my way - whether ti was in to let the servers through or just standing up to stretch or just getting up and looking around - this guy had no sense at all that there were people behind him.  Oh well.  Here are some photos from the game (in place of a video today):

Seriously though, Sanchez is what made the Mets a great bullpen in 06, made them lose it in the second half of 06 (when he was injured) and just be terrible all around in 07.  Another reliable arm is going to make this a World Series team.

Right Around 3:00 every day

Completely unintentional, but I post right about the same time every day.  I guess that's how structured my day is.  Good or bad?  Who knows.

Idol was pretty weird last night.  Some were really good; some not so good.  I was a little surprised - Broadway is far from my thing, but I expected to know more of the songs than I did.  I know Castro's song, Cook's, and Carly.  And that was it.  From the worst to the best: Brook, Jason, Archuleta, Cook, Carly, Syesha.  I think Carly was really good becuase everyone knew the song, but I really think that Syesha's was really really good.  Very surprised to see that this is her style-of-choice, but whatever, it worked.  Brook?  You can't forget the words homey.

Mets lost again yesterday to the Cubs.  Good time I guess for a trip to Washington.  Both of which games I am attending, including tonight in the Diamond Level thanks to Justin Molineaux.

Maybe one of the reasons that the Mets are so bad is because of the bullpen.  This is not monumental information.  It has been well-documented that Heilman sucks.   He just doesn't have it yet.  Yet, funny, he leads the NL is appearances.  Joe Smith is second.  Why does Willie refuse to pitch anyone else?  It's not like the starting pitching has been that bad - it's just that he refuses to trust anyone who isn't one of "his guys."  Ridiculous.  If this team isn't in first place at the break, Willie needs to get the axe.

Delgado and Castillo are beyond terrible right now.  I like Church in the 2 because it keeps Castillo away from killing rallies.  Fine with me.  Alou comes back next week to push Delgado even further down - another plus.  How bad is it that these guys are making a combined $20 million this season and I am outright asking for them to be pushed further and further down in the lineup.  Man, signing Castillo for 4 years and letting Gotay go sure was a great move Omar.

Matt Lewis checks in with an awesome analysis of The Office and Politics.  Really a funny concept and well executed.

There is a Big Game Hunter video-game tournament at a bar tonight.  I wish I was joking.

Just to touch on it again, I am going to see the Mets tonight.  From behind home plate.  And that Johan guy is starting...

Darth Vader gets drunk and beats up Star Wars fans.  Yep.

And finally, a video.

Happy Earth Day!

There is a TON to talk about today, including a ton of links.  So bear with me, and enjoy.

News of the weird: Priest missing on balloon flight.  Yep.

Supposedly drinking and shopping online is the new craze.  And if by "craze," we mean "worst idea ever."  Seriously.  There is an article about Buying-Under-the-Influence.

On this day in 1886, seduction became illegal in Ohio.  Crazy mid-westerners.

I learned that Eric Gordon (of Indiana University who just declared for the draft) played one of Michael Jordan's kids in Space Jam.  This article has nothing to do with that, but does discuss the top 10 underrated sports-movie-babes

Erin Andrews?  Babe.

I had no intentions of making this post entirely links, so I have to apologize.  Just some funny/interesting things I stumbled across during the day.

So beyond that, we have some real news.  Idol is on tonight, and it is Andrew Lloyd Weber night.  How on earth are they going to pull this off?  David Cook does Jesus Christ Superstar, Brook does something from Phantom of the Opera, and David Archuleta is the Magical Mr. Mestophiles.  Because he is a tool.  Kind of interested in seeing what they come up with, though.

Baseball Today podcast is absurd.  In this week's power rankings, Peter Pasquarelli has the Yankees in the top 5.  The only team they have a .500+ record against this year is the Rays.  Powerhouse, I know.    Three Yankee starters outright suck right now - Mussina, Kennedy and Hughes.  I don't care about potential - as of today, the Yankees are not an elite team.  Losing 2 of 3 against the Orioles and Royals alone bumps you from those ranks.

Mets lost last night because Aaron Heilman sucks.  I have had just about enough defending him and Willie Randolph.  They guy clearly can't get anyone out, yet the 8th inning is the perfect time for his use, each and every day.  Why does Willie refuse to use Duaner Sanchez in that role?  Or Feliciano?  Why does Willie insist that Feliciano only be a lefty guy?  Schoenweiss can only get out lefties - why isn't he the LOOGY?  This bullpen needs back some arms.  Matt Wise, weren't you supposed to bolster the back end of this pen?

Any of you readers who actually know me know that I am a huge professional wrestling fan.  Not your typical WT wrestling fan, but a connossieur, if such a thing even exists.  (and for the record, wrestling and connossieur will never be used in the same sentence ever again).  The presidential candidates all appeared on it.  Retarded.  Here are the three videos:

Obama?  Terrible.  F.  Could it be any more obvious that he has absolutely no idea of what he is talking about?

This was like mad-libs.  She is just filling in the blanks.  Well, _____ (wrestling heel), this is like a _____ (match type), I may even have to ____ (catchphrase).  I might even use the _______ (finisher) on Barack Obama.

5 catchphrases, and some energy.  Nice touch.  (and for those counting, that's the Rock, Ric Flair, Triple H, Hulk Hogan, the Rock again, and Stone Cold).  Also slipped in a reference to next weekend's event (which makes WWE happy).  Despite how much everyone laughs at WWE, this is a hugely popular show, consistently #1 on cable.  McCain looked like less of a fool than the other two, and may have scored himself some voters.

Finally, i want to quick have a reflection on the Mets standings.  They are 10-8, good for 6th in the NL.  But if we look a little deeper, they have played games against the Cubs (1st place), Florida (1st place), Milwaukee (serious playoff contender), Atlanta (serious playoff contenders), Philadelphia (last year's division champs), and Washington (bottom feeders).  The Diamondbacks, at the top of the NL, went: 1-2 vs. Cincinatti (under .500), 5-1 vs. Colorado (under .500), 3-0 vs. the Dodgers (under .500), 2-1 vs. San Diego (under .500), and 3-1 vs. San Fran (worst team in baseball).  Arizona's competition is a combined 42-56 (.428) vs. the Mets 61-55 (.525).  I don't even have to comment on this info, though.  You can draw your own conclusions.

And now, our Earth Day video selection:

Going home soon...

Later than usual post, and I did not even have a chance to read the "Today in history.." segments I love so much.

So this is a very basic post.

Mets lost last night but went 2-1 vs. the Phils this weekend, with the loss coming against our 5-starter in Philadelphia where 2 Utley homers were needed to knock us out.  Our #1 and #4 (on paper) are better than their 1 and 3, so I feel good about it.  Jason Carfagno, my token rival, made a bet with me about the series.  Loser has to post the winners' logo as his Facebook picture for 2 weeks.  Seemed fair.  So here is his:

carfagno

Next order of business: a great weekend with Mark and Adam in town.  Tons of fun.  Thanks to everyone involved.

Didn't make it to Green Apple festival due to rain.  It was like a damn monsoon outside.

Joe Morgan needs to shut up about Chase Utley.  Seriously.  Every other sentence for the entire duration of the game was about Utley, relevant or not.  I get it - Morgan was a second basemen too.  But he called Utley "possibly the greatest hitting second basemen of all time" and said he is likely to win the MVP this year.  Keep in mind, Utley is not young - 29 - and, although he is an elite player, has never been All-Time-Great good.  Morgan, however, thought otherwise.  This was borderline Joe Theissman about Michael Vick level of fawning.  Almost.

Bad announcing in general is infuriating.  I am spoiled by the Emmy-award winning combo of Gary Cohen and Ron Darling/Keith Hernandez on SNY, but seriously, is it too much to ask that announcers have a clue what they are talking about?  Jon Miller calls PAUL Casanova out on a play (Raul), had terrible pronounciation in the Sunday night game, and actually called people by the wrong name.  Kenny Albert on Saturday made up a trade from this off-season: Brian Schneider and Ryan Church for Lastings Milledge and Paul LoDuca.  Not quite.

Won my fantasy game this week 8-2-1, and now I am in first place.  Kate is on the docket this week, let's see how good her lineup really is.

Somehow ended up at a neo-nazi rally on Saturday at the Capitol.  We (myself, Mark, and Adam) were wandering around downtown and saw about 1000 or so riot police lining the entire Capitol lawn.  At the base of the Hill were about 50 mounted police, and a million biker-cops.  We asked around, and the cops informed us (rather nonchalantly) that it was a neo-nazi rally, and they were here to ensure peace.  Not peace with the Nazis - they were always peaceful protesters - but rather from the counter-protesters.  In fact, in today's paper, it was reported that there were 5 arrests - all of counter-protesters.  Very strange nonetheless.

And I'm serious - a short one

Really not a lot to talk about today.  I seem to say that a lot, but rarely is it actually as short a post as I claim it to be.

Today may actually be different.

It is ridiculously nice out today and the office?  Not the place I want to be right now.  Although I did just score some new pens and they are BEAST.

Mets won last night in 14.  Damion Easley scores the walk-off run on a ... wild pitch?  Very anticlimatic.  When Jon Lannan on the Nats throws a gem, 6+ with 10 Ks, the Mets can still come back.  Great sign for the Amazins.

Mets-Phillies this weekend.  Santana-Hamels tonight.  I just found out I can embed fun things like this:

Moving on, the May issue of Townhall magazine arrived today.  I didn't even get a chance to touch April yet.  I need to get my butt in gear.

Today is the ultimate skate punk Friday.  Used to be called the less-than-jake fridays, but I got really sick of LTJ after week 40 or so.  SO now it's southern california skateboard music from the tony hawk video games.  you know, the days when you want to drive fast, windows down, music loud?  the faster the better.  lagwagon, guttermouth, much the same, rancid, strung out, etc etc.

can we have a moment of reflection on how good Green Day - Dookie is?  14 years later and this cd is still awesome.

The Office was really good last night, I thought.  Surprise surprise, it's a good episode once they decide to use the actual office as the setting.  Michael is completely off the deep end, but the Jim/Pam tension is back in a big way.  I laughed out loud a number of times - especially Crede and when Michael goes to meet the woman at the coffee shop (10 in looks, 3 in describing herself).  Not a ton of plot advancement, but that was not the point of thje show.  It had multiple, goofy storylines involving a bunch of different characters.  Very nice bounce-back from the terribleness of last week.  The only thing that confused me was that they didn't have the big payoff fight between Jan and Michael where Michael becomes a man and the fans go wild.  Instead, they quietly separate after an entire week of build and then he is a jerk to the new girl.  Why spend an entire episode creating sympathy for someone who just isn't a nice person?

Matt Lewis, my office Office associate (as in, Friday mornings are debates about last night's Office) thinks it's past it's prime.  He likes 30 Rock more now.  I can't agree, but let him know what you think.

I am really getting sick of Facebook.  I still spend a lot of time on it, don't get me wrong, but I hate all of these applications.  I also hate how everyone has an event for literally every single little thing that goes on.  I don't like that it's easier to send an invite to your entire list than it is select people - so I get invitations to things from people I have met once.  Seriously.  Enough already.

And now, a fun song to end the day on

The Iceman cometh

There hasn't been a good Ice Man in a long time.  Somebody is overdue for that nickname.  Then they can do the jaw snap thing from Top Gun (can't find a good clip  - sorry)

Is Shea dangerous?  That has been a recent debate, as someone just died falling off an escalator at Shea.  Is it truly dangerous though?  Max Kellerman and Brian Kenney discussed this on yesterday's 1050 ESPN radio show, claiming that everything about it was poorly designed, especially the upper deck.  But it has to be noted that this guy wasn't just hanging out doing nothing before he "slipped" on the escalator like the article says - the first reports said he was sliding down the railing and slipped.  This was not some goody-goody perfect person who just happened to be caught in a freak accident - no, there was foul play involved.  And this does not even account for any alcohol consumed.  Was it tragic?  Yes.  But don't blame Shea.  There have been 2 deaths at Shea - 1 a few days ago and 1 in 1985 - and it's suddenly the most dangerous place in America.  Then, oh, it comes out that, through quick Google search, the House that Ruth built has had 3 deaths, a guy suffered a broken neck, and that kid who jumped off the upper deck into the netting last summer.  Yankee fans really are blind to the entire world outside of being a Yankee fan.

The Pope is in DC.  Metro traffic wasn't as bad as I expected today.  My roommate Dan saw the Pope traveling from the White House yesterday.  There were a million people on the South Lawn for that.  And seriously, singing Happy Birthday to arguably the most prestigious position in world history?  Only in America.

Idol vote-off was last night.  Ryan Seacrest was messing with my mind by separating the people into two groups, but not assigning "stays" or "gos" with either of them.  Ultimately, the bottom 3 were Brook, Syesha, Kristy Lee.  Kristi Lee goes out.  She should be happy - she made it a lot further than she had the talent for.  She has a good, marketable look and can sing enough for the country ranks.  She will probably be successful.  Next to go?  Syesha.  I was surprised Carly was not in the bottom 3 and that Brook was, but still, as I say every show, it's still a 2-man race.

New Office tonight.  Let's hope it's actually good.  The premise sounds pretty funny, and not-so-coincidentally, also takes place back in the office itself.

News of the weird: this Russian dude went out drinking with his friend, took the bus home, ate some sausage, then slept for a bit before his wife noticed a knife in his back.  Oops.  Best part?  The victim forgave his friend, the stabber, saying "We were drinking and what doesn't happen when you're drunk?"

Mets won last night on a strong outing from John Maine.  Yes, it's the Nats, but hopefully we can rattle off a bunch in a row.  7-6 isn't that bad considering all of the injuries, but this is the time to pull away from the pack, as everyone is playing badly (outside of the Diamondbacks).

South Park last night was awesomely hilarious.  Just stupidity about the Internet getting turned off.  Very very funny, and back to their usual obscene nonsense.

New Toy Story being worked on. (h/t: Steve Carville)

You can locate felons in your area.  This is disturbing.  Also strange?  No way to search for DC.  Although it is funny that the question, Is this legal, is answered "yes...mostly."  (h/t: Where Are My Keys)

And finally, an interesting article about Mickey Mantle's famed 565-foot homerun.

Working for the weekend

Posting a link to Loverboy is too easy.

So how about today's topics?  Idol last night was exciting - Mariah Carey night.  I think it says something that all of the songs people used were from her very early career.  The girls - minus Brook - were clearly the bottom of the pack.  In order from the bottom, I have Carly, Syesha, Kristy Lee, Jason, Brook, David Archuleta, David Cook.  I don't even think Cook's was that good - just creative.  Kristy Lee has some seirous problems with her tempo - I am not sure she knows what a normal pacing is.  The rest were good but not great.  Archuleta's was very very good, but he is a 50 year old woman.  His record will not sell.  The judges said it to Cook - you can be a star today.  Archuleta?  Not so much.

A co-worker pointed out that Archuleta is tailor made for the Christian Rock scene, and I think he is absolutely right.  His style isn't selling on the mainstream scale, yet you throw in some Faith +1 lyrics and he has a mir record.  (Seriously, if you dont get the South Park reference, you probably shouldn't be reading this).  This kid is for 50 year old women, not your average pop-audience.  Whether or not Cook wins, he has a record deal and goes platinum.

The Mets won pretty handily last night.  Huge game from Pelfrey - 7 IP, 0 ER.  Wright had 5 RBI and a HR.  Ryan Church and Pagan are mashing.  I like it.  Except Nationals announcer Don Sutton made an excellent point last night - Pelfrey had thrown 100 pitches.  He will likely get tired after that.  But it has also been 4 1/3 innings since he has gioven up a hit.  Instead, they pay attention to strict pitch counts, take him out, and Heilman promptly gives up back-to-back hits.  Sutton has a point - you know what you are getting out of Pelfrey and you have a healthy lead; why take him out?  Just a thought.

How about some fun links for today?

Stuff Hill People Like is probably the funniest website I have seen in recent memory.  It is so unbelievably accurate it is almost not funny.  But then it really is that funny.  (h/t Matt Lewis)

I am doing 2 videos today.  This is the first, again, courtesy of Matt Lewis:

It may soon be illegal to be too thin in France.  Seriously.

And finally, for my own enjoyment, Ric Flair gets a nod in Congress.

Short post

Today is going to be a nice short post becuase I don't have much to talk about.

Would you rather face Manny Ramirez with guys on second and third or Kevin Youkilis with the bases loaded?  There are arguments for each, but personally I would rather face Youkilis in any situation over Manny.  There's a reason this guy puts up the numbers he did, and even if he is in the twilight of his career, he's still got better numbers than Youk.

Is it wrong to want to bring in your closer early?  I understand the closer is the "9th inning guy", but he is also your most effective reliever.  Why not bring him in in the truly pressure situation, even if it is only the 7th, rather than wait until the 9th when the game might not be as close?  Just a thought.

Idol is on tonight - still a two-man show.  I am guessing the eliminations come in this order - Syesha, Carly, Kristy Lee Cook, Jason Castro, Brook, then  the Final 2.  We shall see how it goes.

Mets-Nationals series this week, Pelfrey pitching tonight.  Reyes should be back.  We need a sweep here.

Today is Tax Day and I couldn't care less.

Last night's Yankee game was really good.  I turn it on, 7-1 Yanks in like the 6th or 7th inning.  Rays score a run.  Then  in the next inning, Crawford hits a 2-run bomb, Carlos Pena gets beaned, then Upton hits a jack.  Change relievers, and Evan Longoria hits his first major league HR to tie the game at 7.  First batter of the next inning is pinch-hitting Robinson Cano, who hits a big fly.  8-7 Yanks, and it stays that way.  This Rays team is semi-legit though - it is a very tough lineup.

This sort of abuse upsets me.   Especially becuase I love the Smithsonians so much.

The Green Apply Music Festival is in town on Sunday.  Really killer lineup, even if it is for a bunch of hippies.  OAR, The Roots, Talib Kweli, will.i.am, Jordin Sparks, Umphrey's McGee, and speeches by a bunch of politicians, Edward Norton and Chevy Chase.  Should be a good time if I can fight through all the reefer.

What a day in history!  Which begs the question - how many good events does it take to reclaim a day known for bad things? Today is sad because Lincoln died today and the Titanic sunk.  On the bright side, Pol Pot died, Congress signed a peace treaty with Great Britain (ending the Revolutionary War), and Jackie Robinson broke the color barrier.  (This is even more significant because the Dodgers gave birth to the Mets, thus, by default, I have a soft spot for the Boys from Brooklyn.)

I think the Pros have it.

How about a fun video to close it out?  (Since I watched this movie AGAIN last night)

Wish it was Sunday, because that's my fun day

I'm Matthew Berry alongside Nate Ravtiz and this is the Fantasy Focus....

sorry, wrong one.

Weekend wrap-up here we go:

Mets went 1-2 this weekend - we lost another Johan start and the bullpen lost the 2nd time.  Nelson Figueroa looked good on Friday and I have some confidence in him going forward.  Duaner Sanchez may be back soon, which is good, and maybe, just maybe Heilman has turned the corner.  Let's see how things go this week.

Pretty uneventful weekend.  It was hot - like, 85 degrees hot.  Went to a really hot bar on Friday and stayed for about 2 hours.  Went to a really hot bar on Saturday and stayed for about 2 hours.  Pretty tame all around..  I need to learn to relax on my weekends and not kill myself with so much to do.

Mark Riley is coming this weekend - nice.  What's on tap?  Yankees- Orioles, Adams Morgan and a free concert on the Mall on Sunday.  Who's playing, you ask?  OAR, Talib Kweli, Common, and The Roots.  Sounds good to me.

This is my first season of fantasy baseball.  I resisted hardcore but finally broke and now I am glad.  I played in 2 football leagues this past year and won one, should have won the other even though I finished in like 5th (got knocked out by a team with little more than 35-point Tom Brady and 30-point Earnest Graham in the playoffs.  Give either of those guys an average day, and I crush him.  But I digress...).  Week 1 of scoring just ended, and I won my match-up 6-5.  Pitching is clearly my strength, although my lineup looks stacked on paper.  Had I played the rest of the league, I would have gone 6-4 with one tie.  Not terrible.  Room for improvement, that is for sure.

Playoff hockey is so far superior to regular season hockey. There is a great sense of urgency and I  quite enjoy it.  When discussing it with a hockey fan, I see it as the difference between American and European soccer.  In  Europe (or playoff hockey) there is an increased sense of urgency, where every posession you attempt to score - there is no playing around like there is during the regular season.

The Rock is an absolutely awesome movie, hands down.

When I write these entries, I write myself notes all throughout the day to remember what I need to talk about.  Today, my next note is as follows:

I hate Comcast.

There is nothing else to add on that.

And now, some linkin'

Why don't they do political campaigns like this in America?  (h/t Where Are My Keys

If I were ever on trial, I would totally want Judge Dredd trying to justify it.  Or I could bust out some other Stallone quote to make it sound reasonable - "I just want my country to love me, as much as I love it."  I can just picture Sly sitting in the jury nodding going "yea, that makes sense..."

And today's video selection:

Friday

It's Friday and I have a decent amount to talk about.

Last night was supposed to be a great tv night.  It was...acceptable at best.

First, Idol.  Michael Johns got eliminated?  Seriously?  And on "Dream On," which was one of his stronger performances?  Wow.  You could tel too, everyone there was shocked, including him.  Then Seacrest was a jerk about it and was like "Last year we didn't eliminate anyone on this show.....but Michael is going home."  Unnecessary.  The Davids are still the elite 2, but I am still surprised about this.

The Office.  Well, it's back.  But this show has really fallen off the map since it peaked.  My main problem is that it does not even have anything to do with the office environment anymore, which is what made it funny.  Think of the last time an episode actually took place in the office - it's been at least a season and a half.  Jim, Michael and Dwight were the focus of the show - now it's just Jim and Pam, and frankly, now that they are together, they don't have a ton of intriguing aspects to their characters.  Michael and Dwight started as the weird guys in the office, but now are completely absurd, unbelievable characters.  As my boss, Jon, said, anyone who says this is a "smart" comedy is wrong - it is not smart at all.  The show started out funny becuase it was so ridiculous.  Office Space was funny not becuase the characters were unbelievable caricatures - they were believable in that this could happen at any office.  Dwight was the weird guy, but now he's a totally unbelievable character.  It has no subtlety to it at all anymore either, there is no tension bteween Jim and Pam, there is no strange encounters between characters - everything is in your face and does not take any digestion.

As far as last night's episode, it was just uncomfortable.  I am sure some people thought the encounters between Michael and Jan were hilarious - I didn't.  Michael is pathetic and unbelievable at this point and Jan does not have a single redeeming quality - these are not real-life characters.  It is too far away from being normal at this point that I can't find it funny.  From the vesectomies to the stupid candle investments to the little tiny bed and the camera in the bedroom - there is not one single thing that Jan does which is not heinous.  The problem is, they clearly want the audience rooting so hard for Michael that they explode when he finally throws her off of him - much like they did with the Jim and Pam relationship.  I am calling it now - there's some strange twist with Michael and Jan right when they should break up (ala Jim's relocation to Stamford) that delays what happens, killing all of its steam.  I guarentee it,.

I know nobody wants to hear this in wrestling terms, but this is how you build a good feud in wrestling.,  You have rising tension, mounting pressure, some conflict but no direct assaults between opponents.  You want the good guy to be beaten down so badly that the audience is foaming at the mouth for him to finally get his hands on the bad guy.  Whenever he gets close, though, he gets foiled, so people literally can't stand it anymore.  But, in the same light, this is what makes a fued/show popular (or hot, in wrestling terms) - this build causes emotion and gets people going and creates interest ("will he get his revenge this week?!"), something which the writers want to prolong.  The only problem, though, is that if you prolong it too much, people lose interest and it fizzles.  When Jim relocated to Scranton, that fizzled the situation.  The end of Season 2 - the kiss - was the peak of that tension.  Then it fell back down by pulling them apart.  By uniting them (or having the blow-off match to a fued), the writers are paying off the months of build.  This works wonderfully...but with no new twists or turns, interest dies down.  New fueds (or sotrylines) are developed.  Now that Jim and Pam are not intriguing, Jan and Michael have become the focal "fued."  Unfortunately, it is not being executed well - the hatred of Jan is way too forthcoming.  The key to a great fued is the slow build - Jim and Pam went 2 full seasons before kissing, then another season and a half before becoming a couple.  Michael and Jan revealed a good 10 pieces of information/hatred in one episode.  Too much.  Not enough slow burn.  There hasn't been time enough for people's hatred to build.  The audience hates Jan, yes, but not to the degree where this sort of thing was subtely brewing for months and months.  Make sense?  Didn't think so.

Next topic: the Mets won last night in 12 innings.  I had a really long anti-Willie Randolph rant to write, but I am going to let it slide becuase nobody is even reading at this point.  They won- good enough.  Way to go Angel Pagan.

This blog editor is annoying me.

And here is the video of the day - very cool.

Lots of quick hits

Today is a day full of linking.  And other fun things.

Teacake was reclassified under the British tax code, and now the government owes $7 million in tax refunds.  Sharp.

Coffee made from animal crap is going for $100 a cup.

Ever get those stupid emails from the Crown Prince of Ajubidubua needing some money?  Now they are getting scammed back.

10 years ago today, the Northern Ireland peace treaty was signed

I didn't watch Idol Gives Back because I thought tagging Idol's name on it is a stupid way to sell a fundraiser.  However, i do have to ask, when did everyone become such big Heart fans?  This band has been retired for like 20 years and suddenly every aspiring singer wants to do their songs.  And now they play Idol Gives Back with Fergie.  Uh...where have you been since 1987?

By the way, tonight is an awesome night for TV.  New Office is on, Idol elimination show, and Mets-Phillies.  Whew.

South Park was pretty strong last night.  Totally irrelevant to current events, but pretty funny anyways.  Mrs. Garrison wants to be Mr. again, so goes through another sex change, and Cartman teaches a bunch of inner city kids to cheat on tests.  Why the whole Cartman thing was included, who knows, since the whole thing was a rip off of Stand and Deliver, which is 20 years old.  Weird.  But all the shoits they took at Bill Beeeelichek and the Pats was pretty funny.  Good, not great, but above average.

The Mets won last night, which was nice.  8-2 over the Phils feels much sweeter than the same margin over another team.  Pelfrey looked good, and if Reyes can handle that double play ball, Pelfrey goes 1 run over 6 innings.  Very strong outing.

Poison is coming to the Nissan Pavilion on July 31.  That's a Thursday?  Good enough.  Hell yea.

I want to hit a lot of baseball stadiums this summer: NYY, NYM, Philly, Baltimore, DC, and maybe Pittsburgh.  If we do Pittsburgh, then maybe Cleveland.  Not unreasonable.  I wonder how much flights are from Cleveland to Baltimore...

That's about it for now.  See you kids tomorrow.

Oh, and since we 1.) love Heart and 2.) really enjoy this song since David Archuleta turned me onto it...
